Sedimentary facies analysis and architecture of alluvial fan systems within rift basin, Billefjorden Trough, Svalbard

Abstract:

Riftová pánev Billefjorden vznikla během středně až pozdně karbonské regionální extenze Svalbardu. Depozice aluviálních kuželů a fan delt v rámci této pánve je spojena se zvýšenou tektonickou aktivitou zlomové zóny Billefjorden ohraničující západní okraj studované pánve typu “half-graben”. Poklesové pohyby na zlomech způsobily, že podložní kra zlomové zóny se stala zdrojovou oblastí s vývojem příčné drenážní sítě a erozí. Erodovaný materiál se uložil v postupně vznikajícím depozičním prostoru na kře nadložní. Během terénního průzkumu v oblasti Billefjorden byly popsány tři systémy aluviálních kuželů a fan delt zařazených do členu Odellfjellet (souvrství Ebbadalen) a dále do souvrství Minkinfjellet: (I) Systém aluviál-ních kuželů Pyramiden byl uložen na rampě mezi Balliolbreen a Odellfjellet zlomy. (II) Sys-tém kuželů Mimerbukta je tvořen převážně fan deltovými sedimenty usazenými na dně pán-ve v rámci nadložní kry zlomu Mimerbukta. (III) Systém kuželů Mumien vznikl přímo na ploše Odellfjellet zlomu a byl vytvořen z lokálního zdroje sedimentů. Rozsah diskutova-ných výchozů umožnil analýzu a srovnání depoziční architektury, stylů a velikostí depozič-ních systémů jednotlivých aluviálních kuželů. Z identifikované cyklicity systémů kuželů Py-ramiden a Mimerbukta lze usuzovat, že jejich depozice probíhala za klesajícího až nízkého stavu mořské hladiny následovaného transgresivním souborem sedimentů. Závěry této práce vedly k vytvoření detailních depozičních modelů, identifikace působících alogenních a auto-genních faktorů řídících sedimentaci a celkově přispívají k porozumění sedimentárního a strukturního vývoje západní okraje pánve Billefjorden během stupňů bashkir a moscov.

Abstract:

The Billefjorden Trough is a rift basin located in Svalbard, Norway, that formed as a half-graben during regional extension in the Mid-Late Carboniferous. Alluvial fan and fan delta de-posits within this rift basin are connected to a period of increased tectonic activity of the Billefjorden Fault Zone, a major fault system bounding the half-graben on the west. The up-lifted footwall of the Billefjorden Fault Zone was a source area for sediments entering the basin as a fault-transverse drainage system, while accommodation was facilitated by the sub-sidence of the hanging wall to the east. Three fan systems of the Odellfjellet Member (Ebbada-len Formation) and Minkinfjellet Formation outcropping in the Billefjorden area were de-scribed in the field: (I) The relay ramp-delivered Pyramiden fan system deposited between the Balliolbreen and Odellfjellet faults. (II) The Mimerbukta fan system is represented pre-dominantly by fan delta sediments accumulated on a basin floor outcropping on the hanging wall of the Mimerbukta fault. (III) The Mumien fan system was derived directly from the footwall block of the Odellfjellet fault. Well-exposed outcrops allowed for an analysis and comparison of depositional styles, sizes and internal architecture of these fan systems. The cyclicity recorded by the Pyramiden and Mimerbukta fan systems indicates that deposition took place during a falling stage to lowstand systems tract followed by a transgressive sys-tems tract. Detailed depositional models of four paleogeographic zones within the relay ramp-fed systems and the footwall-derived fan system revealed variable contributions of the allogenic and autogenic controlling factors. Overall, this thesis provides insights into the sed-imentary and structural evolution of the western margin of the Billefjorden Trough during the Bashkirian and Moscovian.
