Referential Importance and Dynamic Semantic Scales

Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce porovnává dvě teorie informační struktury: informační tok Wallace Chafa a funkční větnou perspektivu Jana Firbase. Pro toto srovnání byly zvoleny specifické oblasti těchto teorií: kontextová zapojenost/nezapojenost a dynamické sémantické škály ve funkční větné perspektivě a aktivační náročnost a referenční význam v Chafově teorii. Práce je konstruována jako kvantitativně-kvalitativní úvaha o možných způsobech, kterými by se tyto dvě teorie mohly propojit. Začíná teoretickými úvahami o obou teoriích, které jsou pak rozšířeny analýzou vybraných textů. Analýza se zaměřuje na podměty v základních distribučních polích. Každé základní distribuční pole je analyzováno v rámci funkční větné perspektivy. Následně je spočítán počet výskytů každého podmětu-referenta a je určen jejich referenční význam. Na základě výsledků analýzy se práce přesouvá k diskuzi nad možnými způsoby propojení těchto dvou teorií. Předmětem úvah je především vztah referenčního významu k dynamickým sémantickým rolím podmětů. Výsledky jsou považovány za předběžné a nasvědčují tomu, že je nutná další práce na uvedených tématech.

Abstract:

The master’s thesis compares two theories of information structure: Wallace Chafe's information flow and Jan Firbas's functional sentence perspective. Specific areas of the two theories were selected for the comparison: context dependence/independence and dynamic semantic scales in FSP; and activation cost and referential importance in Chafe's theory. The thesis is construed as a quantitative-qualitative reflection on the possible ways in which the two theories might be combined. It begins with theoretical considerations of the two theories, which are then extended through an analysis of selected texts. The analysis focuses on subjects in basic distributional fields. Each basic distributional field is analysed in the framework of FSP; then, the number of occurrences of each subject-referent is counted and their referential importance determined. Based on the results of the analysis, the thesis continues with discussing the possible ways of combining the two theories. The relation of referential importance to dynamic semantic subject roles is considered in particular. The findings are considered to be tentative and are suggestive of further work in the topics adduced.
