Cultural differences between north and south Yemen

Abstract:

Válka, jež dnes probíhá v Jemenu, má kromě politických i historické a kulturní rozměry. Ty výrazně ovlivňují tři bojující strany na území Jemenu, přičemž jsou podporovány některými okolními státy, které sledují své vlastní zájmy na zmiňovaném území. Hútíové (Al Houthi) využívají svou kmenovou a sektářskou kulturu v boji o ovládnutí Jemenu a přitom spoléhají na kmenový a náboženský systém. Na druhou stranu obyvatelé jižního Jemenu využívají svou občanskou a civilní kulturu v boji za dosažení nezávislosti na severu. Třetí stranu konfliktu zastupuje jemenský prezident a Muslimské bratrstvo. Je to strana, proti níž se Hútíové obrátili, v současné době ovšem nemá v Jemenu příliš velkou moc ani přímý vliv. Její podporu ale zajišťuje Saúdská Arábie, a proto není tato strana tak bezvýznamná, jak by se zdálo. Z výše zmíněných jevů vyplývá, že se v této bakalářské práci zaměříme na kulturní a společenské rozdíly mezi severním a jižním Jemenem, které výrazně ovlivňují válečný konflikt, jenž ohrožuje existenci Jemenu jako jednotného státu v jeho současné podobě. V této práci zachytíme množství kulturních a společenských rozdílů mezi severním a jižním Jemenem, mezi které patří např. doktrinální rozdíly, rozdíly ve zvycích a tradicích, umění, tanci, v jazyku a dialektech, tradičních oděvech či národní kuchyni. Přitom budeme klást také velký důraz na starověkou a moderní historii Jemenu, abychom zmapovali vliv historie na kulturní rozdíly. Tyto rozdíly často dokážou posilovat negativní vnímání "těch druhých", čímž posilují vnitřní konflikty vedoucí k občanské válce.

Abstract:

The war that is taking place in Yemen today, has historical and cultural dimensions, which strongly influence the three sides in the field, which are supported by regional states to achieve their interests in Yemen. The Houthi are using their tribal and secretariat culture, in their fight to take over Yemen, in which they are relying on their tribal and religious system. Whilst the people of southern Yemen are using their civil and civilized culture in their struggle to achieve independence from the northern part. The third side of the conflict is represented by the Yemeni President and the Muslim Brotherhood. It is a party against which the Houthi have turned, but it doesn't have much power nor direct influence. But it`s supported by Saudi Arabia and therefore is not as insignificant as it might seem. In this Bachelor thesis we will focus on the cultural and social differences between the North and South of Yemen, which significantly affects the conflict, which threatens the existence of Yemen as a united state in its current form. In this work we will capture and talk about many cultural and social differences between the North and South, including doctrinal differences, differences in customs and traditions, arts, dance, language and dialects, traditional clothing or national cuisine. This work also places a great emphasis on the ancient and modern history of Yemen to map the influence of history on these differences.
