Coping with Stress by Teachers

Abstract:

V našej práci sme sa zamerali na vzťah medzi osobnostnými štýlmi a zvládacími stratégiami u vzorky 61 stredoškolských učiteľov. Skúmali sme osobnostné štýly vychádzajúce z teórie PSI autorov Kuhla a Kazéna, a dve úrovne zvládacích stratégií. Zistili sme, že najčastejšie prejavenými osobnostnými štýlmi u stredoškolských učiteľov boli kritický, optimistický a intuitívny štýl. Ako najčastejšie používané zvládacie stratégie sa u učiteľov ukázali vyhýbanie sa, úniková tendencia a odmietanie viny. Zamerali sme sa tiež na genderové rozdiely v týchto premenných. Učiteľky skórovali významne vyššie v sebaistom štýle, zatiaľ čo učitelia sú významne viac rezervovanejší. U zvládacích stratégií sa významný rozdiel prejavil len v potrebe sociálnej opory, ktorá je častejšie používaná učiteľkami. Hlavným cieľom nášho výskumu bolo zistenie vzťahu medzi úrovňou jednotlivých osobnostných štýlov stredoškolských učiteľov a preferenciou zvládacích stratégií. Najsilnejší kladný vzťah sa prejavil medzi sebakritickým štýlom a rezignáciou. Najsilnejšie záporne spolu korelovali sebakritický štýl a stratégia podhodnotenia. Naším posledným cieľom bolo zistenie súvislosti medzi dĺžkou učiteľskej praxe a preferenciou zvládacích stratégií. Ako významný sa prejavil len záporný vzťah medzi narastajúcou dĺžkou praxe a negatívnou stratégiou perseverácie.

Abstract:

In our work we concerned ourself with the relationship between personality styles and coping stategies on a sample of 61 secondary school teachers. We examined personality styles based on the PSI theory by Kuhl and Kazén, and two levels of coping strategies. We found out that the most frequently exhibited personality styles of secondary school teachers were critical, optimistic and intuitive style. The most frequent coping strategies used by teachers were avoidance, escape tendency and denial of guilt. We also investigated the gender differences between these variables. Women scored significantly higher in self-confident style while men are significantly more reserved. What the coping strategies concerns, a significant difference was exhibited only in the need of social support that is more frequently used by women. The main purpose of our research was to investigate the relation between the levels of the particular personality styles of secondary school teachers and the preference of coping strategies. The strongest positive relation that was discovered was between the self-critical style and resignation. The strongest negative correlation was between the self-critical style and the strategy of underestimation. Our last aim was the investigation of the connection between the lenght of the performance of the pedagogical profession and the preference of coping strategies. The only significant relation that was discovered was the negative relation between the growing length of teaching performance and the negative strategy of perseveration.
