Encoders and decoders for turbo codes

Abstract:

V posledních desetiletích stále roste význam efektivního přenosu informace analogovými kanály. Ať už se jedná o bezdrátový přenos pro komunikaci s družicemi a mobilní sítě, nebo o přenos informace například koaxiálním kabelem. Pro přenos digitální informace analogovým kanálem se používá modulování nosného signálu, který je pak analogově přenášen informačním kanálem. Při průchodu informačním kanálem ale může být signál, například v důsledku šumu, pozměněn. Může se tedy stát, že při zpětné demodulaci - procesu, při kterém se z nosného signálu získává zpět informace - nebudou některé bity obdržené shodné s bity odeslanými. Riziko, že informace projde kanálem pozměněna lze řešit změnami kanálu jen velmi omezeně. Efektivní řešení tohoto problému spočívá v použití samoopravných kódů. Tyto kódy jsou schopny, při dostatečně malém poškození, zrekonstruovat původně přenášenou informaci. V prvních desetiletích takřka výhradně používané blokové a konvoluční kódy jsou v posledních letech v praxi nahrazovány důmyslnějšími kódy, mezi které patří právě turbo kódy. Teorie týkající se turbo kódů nicméně v současné době zaostává za praxí. Většina poznatků o turbo kódech je podložena především empirickým testováním a chování různých modifikací turbo kódů nelze příliš předvídat. Jediným způsobem, jak se o takové modifikaci turbo kódu dozvědět více a analyzovat její chování, je experimentálně ji otestovat. Tato práce se zabývá právě experimentálním testováním modifikace turbo kódů. Tato modifikace spočívá v navýšení počtu kon-volučních kódů ze dvou na tři, a současně v navýšení interleaverů z jednoho na dva, avšak jednoduché konstrukce. Součástí práce je implementace této modifikace. Práce zkoumá její chování pro různé hodnoty BER (bit error rate), délky bloku a typy chyb. Zároveň práce navrhuje několik možných schémat pro dekódování takové modifikace. Tato schémata jsou implementována, a práce analyzuje jejich vliv na celkové chování modifikace.

Abstract:

Over the last decades, the matter of effective transmission of information via analog channels has been of growing importance. No matter whether we consider wireless transmission used for satellite communication and mobile networks, or fx. transmission of information via coaxial cable. For transmission of digital information via analog signal, modulated carrier signal is used. This signal is then transmitted through the noisy channel. While passing through the channel, the noise may modify the signal. Therefore, it is possible that after demodulation, some received bits' values will not match the sent bits' values. The means of dealing with erroneous transmission of information passing through the channel by changing the channel's properties are very limited. An effective solution employs using error-correcting codes. These codes are able to reconstruct the message sent, assuming the signal has not been damaged too heavily. Convolutional and block codes, very popular in the last decades, are lately often being replaced by turbo codes. The theory of turbo codes, however, still falls behind their practise. Most findings about these codes are backed mainly by empiric tests. Behaviour of turbo code modifications therefore can't be expected by theoretical means. Only way of finding more about such a modification, is analyzing its behaviour by experimental testing. This thesis deals with experimental testing of a modification of turbo codes. This modification raises the number of convolutional codes used from 2 to 3, and the number of interleavers used from 1 to 2 – these are however of a simple architecture. An integral part of this thesis is also implementation of this modification. The thesis examines its behaviour for various values of BER (Bit Error Rate), block length and types of channel errors. Furthermore, the thesis suggests several possible schemes for decoding of such a modification. These schemes are implemented, and the thesis analyses their impact on the turbo code performance.
