The Convergent Imagination: A Comparative Study of Intertextuality in Robert Clark's and Peter Ackroyd's Novels

Abstract:

Tato disertace se věnuje srovnání dvou současných autorů: amerického spisovatele Roberta Clarka a anglického spisovatele Petera Ackroyda. Srovnávám čtyři romány od těchto autorů: Love Among the Ruins (2001) a Mr. White’s Confession (1998) od Roberta Clarka a English Music (1992) a First Light (1989) od Petera Ackroyda. Cíle této disertace jsou tři: srovnání románů těchto autorů z hlediska intertextuality, navržení teoretického nástroje praktické analýzy intertextuality ve fikci založeného na rétorice a interpretace literární tvorby těchto dvou autorů. Moje hlavní hypotéza zní, že způsob užití intertextuality jak v Clarkových tak v Ackroydových románech odporuje poststrukturalistickým teoriím intertextuality. Intertextualita je v jejich románech literárním nástrojem, pomocí kterého je vystavěna hlavní myšlenka díla. Text není fragmentován. Autoři používají intertextualitu záměrně jakožto způsob sdělení myšlenky směrem od autora přes text až ke čtenáři, a to s rétorickou efektivností a bez rozpadání textu. Hlavní myšlenky těchto čtyřech analyzovaných románů lze také najít v jejich dalších dílech. Ve středu fikce i jiných nebeletristických děl Roberta Clarka se nachází katolické pojetí lásky ve smyslu caritas, jakožto znak odkazující na Boží existenci a jakožto prostředek k dosažení spásy. Díla Petera Ackroyda, na druhou stranu, vyzdvihují jeho pojetí anglické historie a umělecké tradice. Z tohoto důvodu používám pro označení jejich literární tvorby termín sbíhavá imaginace.

Abstract:

My dissertation is dedicated to a comparison of two contemporary authors: an American writer, Robert Clark, and an English writer, Peter Ackroyd. I compare four novels by these authors: Love Among the Ruins (2001) and Mr. White’s Confession (1998) by Robert Clark, and English Music (1992) and First Light (1989) by Peter Ackroyd. This dissertation has three primary goals: to compare the novels of these two authors in terms of intertextuality, to devise a theoretical instrument of practical analysis of intertextuality in fiction based on rhetoric, and to interpret these two authors’ literary productions. My primary hypothesis is that the use of intertextuality in both Robert Clark’s and Peter Ackroyd’s novels is contrary to the poststructuralist theories of intertextuality. Intertextuality in their novels is a literary device by which the novel’s creative messages are constructed. It does not fragment the text. The authors use intertextuality intentionally as a way of communicating a message from the author to the reader without any disintegration with a rhetorical effect. The creative messages of the four analyzed novels are also to be found in their other works. Robert Clark’s fiction and non�fiction is centered on the Catholic caritas as a sign pointing to God’s existence and as a means of redemption. Peter Ackroyd’s writings, on the other hand, accentuate his idea of English history and artistic tradition. For this reason I term their literary productions the convergent imagination.
