Media depiction of children, youth and young people living in the camp of socialism and the camp of "imperialism" in Smena and Mladá fronta throughout the years 1953 – 1968

Abstract:

Diploma thesis deals with media depiction of children, youth and young people living in the camp of socialism and camp of imperialism, as it was constructed in newspaper Smena and Mladá Fronta throughout the years 1953 – 1968. Using discourse analysis method, specifically approach of James Paul Gee, it reveals which strategies were put to use to depict life of kids, youth and young people from opposite poles of cold war and how they were changing during the fifties and the sixties. Paper is divided into three main parts. Theoretical segment defines basic concepts and terms, which are being drawn upon (social construction of reality, ideology, stereotyping, agenda setting, gatekeeping, discourse) and it also brings an overview of existing papers dealing with language in socialist discourse crucial for this paper. In methodological chapter, research proposal is described. Research part consists of analysis of chosen articles. This part is divided into three subheads following logic of the historical-political development in Czechoslovakia, which is, along with media context of the country and international political situation, depicted at the beginning of each analysis of given time period. Main finding of the paper is that in these three different time periods, life of kids, youth and young people was constructed using different discourse models.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá mediálnym obrazom detí, mládeže a mladých ľudí žijúcich v tábore socializmu a tábore imperializmu tak, ako bol konštruovaný v novinách Smena a Mladá fronta počas rokov 1953 až 1968. Využívajúc metódu diskurzívnej analýzy, konkrétne prístup autora Jamesa Paula Geeho, odhaľuje, aké stratégie boli použité na zobrazovanie života detí, mládeže a mladých ľudí z dvoch rôznych pólov studenej vojny, a ako sa tieto stratégie menili v priebehu 50. a 60. rokov. Práca je rozdelená do troch hlavných častí. Teoretická jednak vymedzuje základné koncepty a pojmy, z ktorých práca vychádza (sociálna konštrukcia reality, ideológia, stereotypizácia, agenda setting, gatekeeping, diskurz) a zároveň prináša prehľad existujúcich štúdií pojednávajúcich o jazyku v socialistickom diskurze dôležitých pre túto prácu. V metodologickej kapitole je načrtnutý návrh vlastného výskumu. Vo výskumnej časti je prevedená analýza vybraných článkov. Tá je rozdelená do troch podkapitol podľa logiky historicko-politického vývoja v Československu, ktorý je, spolu s mediálnym kontextom v krajine a medzinárodnou politickou situáciou, priblížený vždy na začiatku analýzy príslušného časového obdobia. Hlavným zistením práce je, že v troch zvolených časových obdobiach bol život detí, mládeže a mladých ľudí konštruovaný pomocou rôznych diskurzívnych modelov.
