Factors affecting health status, life-style and risk perception in students of a medical faculty

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá tématem zdraví a nemoci, psychosociálními a socioekonomickými determinantami zdraví a rizikovými faktory u studentů Lékařské fakulty. Práce má dvě části, teoretickou a praktickou. V teoretické části jsou definovány nejvýznamnější determinanty lidského zdraví, rizikové faktory a možnosti prevence. V praktické části je vyhodnoceno dotazníkové šetření, které probíhalo na náhodně vybraném vzorku studentů Lékařské fakulty. Sběr dat probíhal anonymně, formou modifikovaného dotazníku studie HELEN. Dotazník byl rozdán mezi studenty Lékařské fakulty v areálu Ostravské univerzity. Celkem bylo rozdáno 300 dotazníků, návratnost byla 66 %. Data byla vložena do statistického programu EPI 6 verze 04cz (CDC, 1994) a analyzována použitím programu STATA v.7. Soubor byl charakterizován popisnou statistikou a pro analýzy vztahů mezi proměnnými byl použit X2-test. Cílem práce bylo zjistit zdravotní stav studentů a rizikové faktory, kterým jsou studenti vystaveni. Dále zjistit jejich subjektivní vnímání zdravotního stavu a vnímání faktorů životní stylu a prostředí, jemuž jsou studenti vystaveni. Svůj zdravotní stav studenti hodnotili v 75,8 % jako dobrý. Zdravotní potíže trvající déle než 6 měsíců mělo 31,2 % studentů, tyto obtíže většinou uváděly ženy. Nejčastěji si studenti stěžovali na problémy s pohybovým aparátem, dýchacím a nervovým systémem. U necelé poloviny (44,2%) dotázaných studentů se někdy projevila alergie. Vysoký krevní tlak byl zjištěn u 13 respondentů a vyšší hladina cholesterolu u 20 studentů. Rozdíl v BMI mezi pohlavími byl statisticky významný, z mužů mělo 21 % nadváhu, zatímco u žen to bylo pouze 8 %. Mezi ženami však bylo 10 %, které trpí podváhou. V souboru bylo 20 % kouřících studentů. Studenti vnímají jako nejvýznamnější faktory ovlivňující lidské zdraví obezitu, kouření a stravovací návyky. Za nejméně významný faktor považují nedostatek peněz.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the topics of health and diseases, psychosocial and socio-economical determinants of health, and risk factors of students of medical faculty. The paper has two main parts ? a theoretical and a practical one. In the theoretical part, the most significant determinants of human health, risk factors and possibilities of preventions are defined. The practical part evaluates the survey that was conducted on the basis of randomly selected sample of students of the faculty of medicine. The collection of data was done anonymously through the modified questionnaire of the HELEN study. The questionnaire was distributed among the students of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ostrava. Exactly 300 questionnaires have been distributed and the response rate was 66 %. The collected data have been processed by a statistical programme EPI 6 version 04cz (CDC, 1994) and analysed with the STATA programme version 7. The sample was characterized using the descriptive statistics and X2-test was used in order to analyse the relationship between different variables. The aim of the thesis was to find out the health state of students and the risk factors that these students had to face. Next, it is aimed to find out their subjective perception of health state and environmental factors that the students are exposed to. Nearly 76 % of students evaluated their health state as good, while 31,2 % of students, mostly women, admitted health problems lasting longer than 6 months. The students mostly complained of the problems with musculoskeletal system, respiratory, and nervous system. Nearly half of all students (44,2 %) have had symptoms of allergies. High blood pressure was reported by 13 % of respondents and in 20 of them a higher level of cholesterol was found. The difference in BMI between genders was statistically significant ? 21 % of men were overweight, while only 8% of women had this problem. However, there was 10 % of women that suffer of underweight. There was 20 % of smokers among the questioned students. Students perceived obesity, smoking and diet as the most significant factors that influenced their health. As the least important factor they have marked was the lack of money.
