Negligible in negligee: portrayal of women in the video games

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je zaměřit se na zobrazení žen v počítačových hrách. Hlavními cíli při zkoumání tohoto tématu je stanovení, jak často jsou ženy v počítačových hrách zobrazovány, jaké role jim jsou přisuzovány a jakým způsobem jsou zobrazovány fyzicky a psychicky. Dále zejména jaké genderové stereotypy se ve hrách objevují, zda je objektifikace žen stále problémem a jestli ve hrách přítomný sexismus je na ústupu. Vzhledem k narůstající oblíbenosti her ve společnosti jsou jejich příběhy nedílnou součástí kultury. Jak toto medium dospívá, musí být zohledněn jeho vliv zejména v kontextu feminismu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the portrayal of women in the video games. The main objectives in examining this phenomenon are to establish how often women are depicted in video games, what roles they are permitted and the manner in which they are portrayed both physically and ideologically. Of particular note is the perpetuation or redefinition of gender stereotypes, whether objectification of women is still an issues and whether the endemic sexism of the nascent video games culture is now in decline. As video games are now a major narrative in society the tales they tell are now indispensable cultural product and should be read as text. As this medium matures, its impact and legacy-especially in terms of feminism - will need to be assessed. This thesis forms part of that movement.
