Conceptual perspective on Time Bank as a Soft System

Abstract:

Disertační práce na téma: Konceptuální pohled na Time Bank jako měkký systém se zabývá fenoménem známým jako Time Bank. Time Bank patří do skupiny doplňkových ekonomických systémů a je charakteristický silným zaměřením na aplikaci. Nikdy předtím nebyl studován z pohledu systémového inženýrství jako systém. Jako systém založený na lidech můžeme Time Bank nazývat měkkým systémem, což dělá jakoukoliv analýzu ještě složitější. Doposud byl za Time Bank považován jakýkoliv systém, který následuje pět hlavních klíčových hodnot, a který využívá časovou měnu k zajištění směny zejména služeb. Systémová definice však chybí. Tato disertační práce si klade za cíl toto změnit. Uvádí Time Banking v kontextu doplňkových ekonomických systému i dalších věd. Dále nastiňuje rozdíl mezi tvrdými a měkkými systémy, která vede k výběru vhodné metodologie, kterou je Metodologie měkkých systémů Petera Checklanda. Dále je uvedena nová taxonomie Time Banku jako systémový přístup k popisu různých přístupů k problematice. Na základě této taxonomie a s použitím Metodologie měkkých systémů bylo identifikováno a analyzováno devět hlavních modelů Time Banku. Výsledkem této analýzy jsou hlavní procesy a elementy Time Banku jako systému, které jsou prezentovány a následně kombinovány do univerzálně definovaného modelu tohoto systému. Tento model je dále využit ve vztahu k informačnímu a znalostnímu managementu a informačním technologiím. V závěru je naplněn cíl disertační práce reálnou aplikací Metodologie měkkých systému s jasnou a komplexní definici Time Bankingu v prostředí systémových věd.

Abstract:

Time Banking (TB) ranks among the groups of complementary economic systems, with TBs characterized by their strong focus on application. Never before has TB been studied from the point of view of systems engineering and as a system. As a system based on human beings the Time Bank is a so-called soft system, which makes any analysis even more complicated. Until now, as Time Banking has been generally considered to be any system which follows a set of specific core values and which uses a time currency to facilitate exchange of mostly services, but a clear systemic definition is missing. This dissertation thesis aims to change this. It introduces Time Banking in the context of complementary economic approaches and the context of other related sciences. Further, the difference between a hard and soft system is sketched out, leading to the selection of an appropriate methodology: The Soft System Methodology of Peter Checkland. In addition, a new Time Bank taxonomy is introduced as a systematic way to describe various approaches to Time Banking. Based on the taxonomy with use of Soft System Methodology, nine main models of Time Bank have been identified and analyzed. As a result of this analysis, the main processes and elements of Time Banking as a system are presented and combined into one universally defined Time Bank model. This model is also used to relate the Time Bank system to information and knowledge management as well as information technologies. In conclusion, the aim of dissertation was fulfilled by the real application of Soft System Methodology, with a clear and comprehensive definition of Time Banking presented within an environment of systems sciences.
