International sanctions and crisis in Venezuela

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou a principy donucujících opatření v mezinárodním právu (MP), přesněji sankcemi Spojených států amerických (USA) a Evropské unie (EU) a jejich aplikací na vybraný příklad, představovaný již dlouhotrvající politicko-ekonomicko-sociální krizí ve Venezuele. V první části je uvedena obecná definice a objasněna podstata a zásady donucujících opatření, jakož i úvod do jejich historie. Dále je vysvětlen kontext krize ve Venezuele, na nějž již navazují politika a konkrétní druhy sankcí obou vybraných aktérů. Na základě těchto poznatků je v poslední části formulováno šest důvodů, proč k nim USA přistoupily dříve, ve větším rozsahu a s tendencí k dalšímu stupňování. Jejich analýzou se zjišťuje, zda jsou relevantní a poskytují odpověď na tuto výzkumnou otázku.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis deals with the subject of coercive measures in international law, namely with sanctions imposed by the United States of America (USA) and the European Union (EU) against Venezuela, which has been targeted with a long-lasting political, economical and social crisis. The first part mentions a general definition and principles of coercive measures, as well as the introduction to their use in the history. After that, a context of the crisis in Venezuela is explained, followed by the sanctions policy and the particular examples of sanctions imposed regarding the USA and EU. Based on the ascertained findings, it was possible to formulate six reasons, why the USA decided to impose sanctions earlier, in a greater scale and with the tendency to their intensification. The analysis of each of these reasons enabled to discover, which of them are relevant and might most likely serve as an answer to the research question.
