(Un)objective depiction of the Czech Republic in German online media (sueddeutsche.de, spiegel.de, faz.de)

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to consider the issue of objectivity in prominent German media (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Der Spiegel) and their coverage of the Czech Republic and politics. The thesis strives to demonstrate that the media coverage of the Czech Republic is biased. The author describes the basics of Critical Discourse Analysis and concentrates on authorship and objectivity in the age of new media. He also takes into account the pragmatic perspective of communication and the role of metaphor in our everyday language by presenting metaphor as a key concept in rhetoric, philosophy and pragmatics. The author also considers metaphor from the point of view of the cognitive linguistics. In the analytical part of the thesis the author examines and describes various aspects of these theories in an analysis of selected discursive fragments from German online media. Therefore the objective of this thesis is not only to indicate the lack of objectivity in German online media, but also to provide constructive criticism of this issue.

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce přispívá k tématu neobjektivity renomovaných německých médií (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Der Spiegel) v novinářském zpravodajství o České republice a politice. Práce chce prokázat, že německá onlineová média o České republice zpravují neobjektivně. Autor práce v ní popisuje základy Kritické diskursivní analýzy a zabývá se autorstvím a objektivitou v době nových médií. Autor se také věnuje pragmatickému hledisku komunikace a roli metafory v běžné mluvě tím, že metaforu představuje jako klíčovou oblast rétoriky, filozofie a pragmatiky. Autor se zabývá i metaforou z kognitivně lingvistického hlediska. Různé aspekty těchto teorií autor rozebírá a popisuje při analýze vybraných diskursivních fragmentů z německých onlineových médií v praktické části práce. Cílem této práce není pouze poukázat na nedostatečnou objektivitu těchto zpravodajských článků, ale i tuto problematiku konstruktivně kritizovat.
