Didactic Potential of Board Games in Teaching English at Primary Schools

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se soustředí na využití deskových her ve výuce angličtiny. Cílem této práce je prozkoumat potenciál deskových her ve spojitosti se zapamatováním slovíček, ale také zjistit, zda hry zvyšují zájem a motivaci žáků při výuce angličtiny na základních školách. Práce se skládá z teoretické a empirické části. Teoretická část se nejdříve soustředí na hry ve vzdělávání, jsou představeny různé typy her využitelné v pedagogice a jsou vysvětleny termíny „hra“ a „game-based learning“. Dále se práce zaměřuje na motivaci dětí v mladším školním věku. Poté se teoretická část soustředí na deskové hry, jejich historii, typy a využití ve vzdělávání. Na závěr je nastíněna výuka cizího jazyka dětí v mladším školním věku. V empirické části práce je nejdříve představen experiment, ve kterém jsou při výuce angličtiny ve třetí třídě základní školy použity tři edukační deskové hry. Tyto hry se soustředí na novou slovní zásobu. Žáci jsou poté testováni a jsou porovnány výsledky experimentální a kontrolní skupiny. Následně jsou žáci požádáni o vyplnění krátkého dotazníku týkajícího se učení hrou a motivace. Zjištěné skutečnosti jsou poté dále interpretovány. V závěru práce jsou pak uvedeny výsledky výzkumu, ze kterých vyplývá, že deskové hry mají pozitivní vliv na učení a motivaci žáků.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on the use of board games in English language education. The aim of this thesis is to explore the didactic potential of board games in connection to vocabulary retention, as well as to ascertain whether games increase pupils’ interest and motivation in learning English at primary schools. The thesis consists of the theoretical and empirical part. The first part examines the position of games as an educational element, presents types of games utilized in education and explains the term “game” and “game-based learning”. Furthermore, young learners’ motivation is discussed. Another section of the theoretical part focuses on board games, their history, types and use in education. The last chapter deals with foreign language education and young learners. In the empirical part of the thesis, firstly, an experiment is conducted where three educational board games are used in teaching new vocabulary in English lessons of a 3rd grade. The pupils are then tested and the performance of the experimental and control group is compared. Secondly, pupils are asked to fill in a questionnaire with questions pertaining to learning by gaming and motivation. The results from both the experiment and the questionnaire are then further interpreted. In the last section of the thesis, the outcomes of the research are presented. The research proved that board games have a positive influence on pupils’ learning and motivation.
