Phonetics in 16th to 18th century Czech

Abstract:

Disertační práce přispívá k poznání českého hláskosloví v 16.–18. století se zaměřením na protetické v-, diftongizaci ú- > ou- na začátku slova, diftongizaci ý > ej a úžení é > í. Materiálově vychází z jazykové analýzy více než 100 dobových literárních památek většinou tištěné domácí produkce, přihlédnuto je též k rukopisné praxi a k předpokládanému stavu v mluveném jazyce. Metodologicky vychází z monografie J. Poráka Humanistická čeština (1983) a M. Janečkové K jazyku českého baroka (2009). Kromě postihnutí rozšíření sledovaných hláskoslovně-ortografických jevů v jednotlivých literárních oblastech (náboženské, historiografické, prakticky odborné a jazykově reflexivní texty) a v jednotlivých údobích (humanistické, barokní a raně obrozenecké období) bylo cílem též postihnout faktory podmiňující (ne)uplatnění proměnných u konkrétních slov a slovních tvarů, díky čemuž si lze vytvořit plastičtější obraz o kultivované češtině tiskařské komunikace v 16.–18. století a propojit jej s vývojovou linií směřující k dnešní spisovné češtině.

Abstract:

The dissertation is a contribution to the knowledge of Czech phonetics in the 16th to 18th century focusing on prothetic v-, diphthongisation of ú- > ou- at the beginning of the word, diphthongisation of ý > ej, and reduction of é > í. In the terms of research material, the dissertation is based on linguistic analysis of more than a hundred contemporary literary works originating mainly from domestic printed production. However, manuscript practice and spoken language are also taken into account. Methodology stems from the monograph by J. Porák Humanistická čeština (Humanistic Czech, 1983) and from the monograph by M. Janečková K jazyku českého baroka (Towards the Language of Czech Baroque, 2009). In addition to capturing the distribution of the observed phonetico-orthographic phenomena in individual literary fields (religious, historiographical, technical and linguistically reflective texts), and in individual periods (humanistic, baroque and early resurgence period), the objective of the dissertation was also to identify the factors that condition the application/non-application of variables in particular words and word forms, which helps to create a more plastic image of cultivated Czech language used in printed communication during the 16th to18th century, and to connect it with the development leading to contemporary standard Czech.
