Reflection of the society in the work of Emile Zola

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the literary work of Émile Zola which he called a natural and social study of a family during the Second French Empire. It presents a cycle of twenty novels that serve as the author´s documentation of the then era as well as society and can therefore be seen as an experimental social study based on scientific evidence of that time. The work focuses on two novels of this cycle, Au Bonheur des Dames and L'Assommoir, in terms of the author´s depiction of his characters´ lives in various social classes in times of the Second French Empire. The literary analysis investigates Zola´s description of working class as well as upper class environment and its representantives, mainly labourers or salesmen. The work also provides a profound stylistic examination of these novels. The aim of this thesis is to examine and compare the novels in terms of the distinctive attributes of Zola´s literary style that are well reflected in his works.

Abstract:

V této práci se soustředíme na velkolepé dílo Émila Zoly, které nazval přírodopisnou a sociální studií jedné rodiny za druhého císařství. Jedná se o cyklus dvaceti románů, ve kterém se autor snaží co možná nejvěrněji zdokumentovat tehdejší dobu a společnost. Jedná se o jakousi experimentální sociální studii, ve které se autor opírá a vědecké poznatky tehdejší doby. Hlavní myšlenkou tohoto díla jako celku je ukázat, jak nejen náš původ, ale zároveň i prostředí, ve kterém žijeme, ovlivňuje naši existenci. Na základě dvou románů z toho cyklu se snažíme zachytit, jakým způsobem Émile Zola popisuje životy lidí z jednotlivých společenských vrstev v době druhého císařství. Předmětem diplomové práce je rozbor dvou románů Zabiják a U Štěstí dam. Literární rozbor je zaměřen na způsob, jakým Émile Zola zachycuje prostředí dělníků a obchodníků, popř. vyšší společnosti. Součástí rozboru je jazyková a stylistická analýza zvolených textů. Cílem práce je podrobné zkoumání a srovnání textů a vyvození charakteristických znaků jazyka a stylu Émila Zoly v tvorbě zmíněných děl.
