Parameter Synthesis for Systems with Real Time

Abstract:

Časové automaty se staly standardem pro modelování systémů s časem. Parametrické časové automaty rozšiřují časové automaty o možnost použití parametrů ve strážích a invariantech automatu. Zatímco problém dosažitelnosti hledá valuace parametrů, pro které je daná lokace automatu dosažitelná, problém syntézy parametrů hledá valuace parametrů, pro které je splněna obecnější specifikace parametrického časového automatu, například formule lineární temporální logiky (LTL). V této práci představíme nové výsledky rozhodnutelnosti pro problém dosažitelnosti, zavedeme novou lineární temporální logiku vyjadřující se o hodinách (CA-LTL), a taktéž vyřešíme problém syntézy ohraničených celočíselných parametrů pro LTL a CA-LTL vlastnosti a parametrické časové automaty. Pro parametry s reálnými hodnotami je problém dosažitelnosti nerozhodnutelný. Proto se v práci zaměříme na celočíselné parametry, zatímco čas zůstane spojitý. Dokážeme, že problém dosažitelnosti zůstává nerozhodnutelný pro parametrické časové automaty s třemi hodinami a jedním parametrem. Zároveň však ukážeme, že v případě libovolného množství hodin, kde jen jedny hodiny jsou porovnávány s parametry (libovolným množstvím), je problém dosažitelnosti rozhodnutelný. Podle našeho mínění je toto první kladný výsledek v případě spojitého času a neomezených celočíselných parametrů (s výjimkou jednoduchých případů s jedněmi hodinami). Protože problém syntézy parametrů je obecně nerozhodnutelný, zavedeme omezení na valuace parametrů, díky kterému se stane problém syntézy parametrů rozhodnutelný pro LTL vlastnosti. Problém syntézy ohraničených celočíselných parametrů lze řešit s použitím explicitního výčtu všech možných valuací parametrů. My však navrhneme nové řešení založené na zónové abstrakci, díky čemuž dosáhneme výrazně rychlejšího výpočtu. Další část práce se věnuje představení nové logiky CA-LTL, příslušnému ověřování modelu a příslušné technice syntézy ohraničených celočíselných parametrů. Ukážeme, jak aplikovat standardní přístup ověřování modelů založený na automatech, abychom ověřili platnost CA-LTL formule na časovém automatu se spojitým časem. Naše řešení zavádí nový koncept tzv. ultraregionů. S využitím ultraregionů vyřešíme také problém syntézy ohraničených celočíselných parametrů pro CA-LTL vlastnosti. Pro potvrzení přínosu našeho přístupu jsme vytvořili experimentální nástroj a porovnali naši metodu vůči naivní technice využívající výčet všech valuací parametrů.

Abstract:

For modelling of behaviour with time aspects the timed extension of nondeterministic finite automata called timed automata became the standard. Parametric timed automata extend the timed automata with the possibility to use parameters in the clock constraints. While the reachability problem for parametric timed automata computes parameter valuations for which certain locations are reachable, the parameter synthesis problem computes parameter valuations for which a more general type of specification is satisfied, e.g. linear temporal logic (LTL) formula. In the thesis we provide new decidability results for the reachability problem, we introduce new clock-aware linear temporal logic (CA-LTL) as an extension of LTL, and we solve the parameter synthesis problem for CA-LTL properties and restricted parameters. In general, if the parameters are real-valued, the reachability problem for parametric timed automata is undecidable even for various restricted subclasses. We thus focus on the case where parameters are assumed to be integer-valued, while the time still remains continuous. On the one hand, we show that the reachability problem remains undecidable for parametric timed automata with three clocks and one parameter. On the other hand, for the case with arbitrary many clocks where only one of these clocks is compared with (an arbitrary number of) parameters, we show that the reachability problem is decidable. The undecidability result tightens the bounds of a previous result which assumed six parameters, while the decidability result extends the existing approaches that deal with discrete-time semantics only. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first positive result in the case of continuous-time and unbounded integer parameters, except for the rather simple case of single-clock automata. As the general parameter synthesis problem is undecidable we introduce restrictions on parameter valuations under which the parameter synthesis problem is decidable for LTL properties. The investigated bounded integer parameter synthesis problem for LTL properties could be solved using an explicit enumeration of all possible parameter valuations. However, we propose a new zone-based abstraction and parameter synthesis algorithm which results in a faster computation. To justify the usefulness of our approach, we provide an experimental evaluation and compare our method with the explicit enumeration technique. The next part of the thesis is focused on CA-LTL and corresponding model checking and parameter synthesis techniques. We show how to apply the standard automata-based approach of Vardi and Wolper to check for the validity of a CA-LTL formula over the continuous-time semantics of a timed automaton. Our model checking procedure employs a new concept of the so-called ultraregions. Finally, we solve the bounded integer parameter synthesis problem for CA-LTL properties. The solution extends the parameter synthesis method for LTL properties with the concept of the ultraregions.
