Verbal periphrases "tener que + infinitive" and "deber + infinitive" in the context of El País newspaper

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the Spanish grammatical phenomenon of verbal periphrases tener que + infinitive and deber + infinitive and researches their concrete use in the context of Spanish periodical El País. The first aim of our study is to describe the grammatical rules of the phenomenon and verify if their use in the periodical corresponds with their theoretical rules. The work also aims to research whether the use of these two periphrases changes depending on the periodical section, or as the case may be, how and why these changes are created. The thesis is divided in two parts, one being theoretical and one practical. The theoretical part describes the grammatical background and sums up its general characteristics and division of the periphrases. Moreover, the first part emphasizes the exceptions in the use of tener que + infinitive and deber + infinitive produced by the newspaper context. In the practical part we analyzed the articles of El País and concrete examples to verify the function of the theory which is described in the first part. We are also paying attention if the changes are created depending on the periodical section. The list of the articles which we analyzed is accessible at the Google disk link which we mention at the end of the thesis.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá slovesnými perifrázemi tener que + infinitiv a deber + infinitiv a sleduje jejich konkrétní použití v kontextu španělského periodika El País. Cílem práce je popsat tyto jevy z hlediska gramatiky a ověřit, zda se jejich konkrétní použití v periodiku shoduje s teoretickými pravidly. Práce má také za cíl sledovat, jestli se použití těchto dvou perifrází mění v závislosti na rubrice, případně jak a proč k těmto změnám dochází. Práci jsme rozdělili na dvě části, teoretická část popisuje gramatická pravidla užití perifrází, shrnuje jejich základní charakteristiku a rozdělení a zdůrazňuje výjimky v úzu, které jsou generovány kontextem periodika. Praktická část se věnuje samotné analýze článků získaných z deníku El País, ve které na praktických příkladech ověřujeme funkci teorie popsané v první části a sledujeme změny v užití v závislosti na jednotlivých rubrikách. Seznam článků, se kterými jsme pracovali je k dispozici pod odkazem na Google dokument na konci práce.
