Antibiotic - resistant bacteria represent a serious public health issue of the 21st century. Antibiotic resistance is mostly encoded extra chromosomally within genetic elements. V poslednom období dochádza k nárastu patogénov rezistentných na antibiotiká. Tento vážny problém 21. storočia sa týka verejného zdravia na celom svete. Antibiotická rezistencia býva najčastejšie kódovaná extrachromozómalne na genetických elementoch. Plazmidy rezistencie (R - plazmidy) nesú rezistenciu na antibiotiká ako aj na iné rastové inhibítory.
