What is the mysticism good for? A discourse analysis of mutual legitimization strategies of psychedelic and mystical experience research

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is based on the research of M. D. Corbin who analyzed the strategies of legitimization of spirituality in science with the use of psychedelics. One of these strategies is to measure the mystical experience of respondents after their use of psychedelics. Researches using this strategy are the primary data of this work. The first research question is: How is the concept of mystical experience legitimized in the research of psychedelics? Beside the new data from the last decade, I extend the research done by Corbin with the research of the opposite legitimization relationship. I postulate a hypothesis that not only the psychedelics legitimized the research of mysticism, but also that mysticism legitimized the research of psychedelics. The second research question is: How do the specific empiric results of the analyzed researches further influence and form another paradigm of the research of the relationship of psychedelics and mystical experience? Together, these questions answer the problem “what is the mystic good for” on the level of legitimization and on the level of theoretical assets of mystical experience for the research of psychedelics. Before the analysis itself conducted with the tools of the discourse analysis according to P. Gee, in the theoretical part of my work I focus on the context of stigmatization of psychedelics and I challenge the theory of W. T. Stace from which are the scales for measuring mystics derived. That’s why I postulate the second hypothesis that the scales for measuring of the mystical experience can be interpreted as the scales for measuring of subjective effects of psychedelics without losing the logical consistency of analyzed research. Results of the research confirmed the claim of Corbin about the mystical experience being legitimized mainly through psychedelics, but also showed that after the successful establishing of the mystical experience it served as the effective legitimizer of psychedelic research, but could not provide an explanation of the effects of psychedelics. As a solution to this problem, I propose to interpret the mystical scales as it is proposed in the second hypothesis, as this interpretation is consistent with the empirical results of the researches analyzed. For the explanation of the effects of psychedelics I propose to focus on the reductive but well theorized variables.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca stavia na výskume M. D. Corbin, ktorá analyzovala stratégie legitimizácie spirituality vo vede pomocou psychedelík a jednou z týchto stratégií je meranie mystického zážitku u respondentov po ich užití. Výskumy využívajúce túto stratégiu tvoria primárne dáta tejto práce. Prvá výskumná otázka znie: Akými spôsobmi sa legitimizuje koncept mystickej skúsenosti vo výskume psychedelík? Bádanie Corbin rozširujem okrem nových dát za poslednú dekádu aj o skúmanie opačného legitimizačného vzťahu. Postulujem hypotézu, že nie len psychedeliká legitimizovali výskum mystiky, ale aj mystika legitimizovala výskum psychedelík. Druhá výskumná otázka znie: Ako konkrétne empirické výsledky analyzovaných výskumov ďalej ovplyvňujú a vytvárajú ďalšiu paradigmu výskumu vzťahu psychedelík a mystickej skúsenosti? Spoločne tieto otázky zodpovedajú problém „načo je nám mystika“ ako na legitimizačnej úrovni, tak na úrovni teoretického prínosu mystickej skúsenosti pre výskum psychedelík. Pred samotnou analýzou výskumov pomocou nástrojov diskurzívnej analýzy podľa P. Geeho sa v teoretickej časti zameriavam na kontexty stigmatizácie psychedelík a problematizujem teóriu mystiky W. T. Stacea, z ktorej sú derivované škály pre jej meranie. Postulujem preto druhú hypotézu, že škály pre meranie mystiky sú interpretovateľné ako škály merajúce subjektívne účinky psychedelík bez straty logickej konzistencie analyzovaných výskumov. Výsledky výskumu potvrdili tvrdenie Corbin o tom, že mystický zážitok sa v akademickom diskurze legitimizoval najmä vďaka psychedelikám, no poukázali i na to, že po úspešnom etablovaní sa mystický zážitok slúžil ako účinný legitimizátor psychedelického výskumu, avšak nie je schopný poskytnúť explanáciu efektov psychedelík. Ako riešenie tohto problému preto navrhujem interpretovať mystické škály tak, ako navrhuje druhá hypotéza, nakoľko takáto interpretácia je konzistentná s empirickými výsledkami analyzovaných výskumov. Pre vysvetlenie efektov psychedelík navrhujem zamerať sa na reduktívne, ale dobre teoretizované psychologické premenné.
