Determinants of capital structure of joint-stock companies

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá determinantami kapitálové struktury českých akciových společností z odvětví zpracovatelského průmyslu, stavebnictví a zemědělství, lesnictví a rybářství. Cílem diplomové práce je identifikovat vliv zvolených firemních charakteristik na kapitálovou strukturu, respektive zadluženost, českých akciových společností ze zvolených odvětví. Sekundárním cílem je zjistit, která ze dvou teorií kapitálové struktury (trade-off theory, pecking order theory) je v kontextu české ekonomiky relevantní. Tyto cíle jsou naplněny prostřednictvím testování stanovených hypotéz s využitím korelační analýzy a vícenásobné lineární regrese. Výsledky ukazují, že rentabilita aktiv, podíl fixních aktiv na bilanční sumě a příležitosti k růstu jsou významnými determinantami kapitálové struktury zkoumaných společností. Zjištěno také bylo, že vliv determinant se v jednotlivých odvětvích liší. Zatímco ve stavebnictví a zpracovatelském průmyslu dominuje pecking order theory, v zemědělství se teorie doplňují. Diplomová práce rozšiřuje literaturu zejména v oblasti zkoumání jednotlivých odvětví.

Abstract:

Master thesis is focused on capital structure of czech joint stock companies operating in construction industry, manufacturing industry and agriculture. The objective of the master thesis is to identify influence of chosen determinants of capital structure on debt ratio of joint stock companies from the Czech Republic in three industries. Secondary objective is to find out which theory of capital structure (trade-off theory, pecking order theory) is relevant in czech context. These objectives are fulfilled through testing research hypothesis using correlation analysis and multiple linear regression. As results show profitability, fixed assets and growth are significant determinants of capital structure of surveyed joint stock companies. Findings also show, that influence of individual determinants differ by industry. While construction and manufacturing industries follow pecking order theory, capital structure of agriculture joint stock companies can be partially explained by pecking order theory, and partially by trade-off theory. Master thesis expands literature on capital structure in area of examining individual industries.
