“Wu-Tang Is for the Children”: The Cultural Transmission of Moral Norms Through Narrative Art

Abstract:

Několik významných hlasů v morální psychologii a literárním darwinismu nedávno přišlo s tvrzením, že narativní umění sehrává klíčovou roli v procesu sociálního učení morálních norem a funguje jako jakási zásobárna lokálních morálních informací. Doposud však nebyl vypracován komplexní a integrativní náhled vysvětlující vnitřní fungování této morálně-edukativní funkce narativního umění. Mým hlavním cílem v rámci této dizertační práci je tuto situaci napravit. Skrze využití interdisciplinární perspektivy nabízím právě takový syntetizující a integrativní náhled na sociální funkci narativního umění ukotvený v teoriích biologické a kulturní evoluce. V první části dizertace analyzuji a rekonstruuji výše zmíněný integrativní náhled. Nejdříve ukazuji, jak hluboce jsou lidé jako druh závislí na procesu sociálního učení, který jim umožňuje pružně optimalizovat jejich chování v prostředí vyznačujícím se vysokou prostorovou a časovou proměnlivostí – to platí obzvláště pro oblast morálky (1. kapitola). Následně rozebírám, jak je evoluční historií zformovaná lidská morální psychologie snáze ovlivnitelná těmi typy sociálního učení morálky, které jsou svou povahou spíše neformální, cílí spíše na afektivně zabarvené morální intuice než rozumové kapacity a pracují s narativními prvky (2. kapitola). Nakonec argumentuji, že narativní umění samo o sobě vykazuje blízké vazby na morálku a je využíváno v rámci lidské vývojové větve pro svoji schopnost uchovávat a přenášet adaptivní informace o lokálním prostředí, a to i o tom sociálním, včetně morálních norem (3. kapitola). Druhou část koncipuji jako případovou studii, která mi umožňuje předvést na konkrétním příkladu onen obecný teoretický rámec, a to skrze jeho aplikaci na jednu v poslední době nebývale populární inkarnaci moderního narativního umění – současnou americkou rap music. Po uvedení důvodů, proč jsem si pro takovou případovou studii zvolil právě tento žánr (4. kapitola), ho následně analyzuji především skrze perspektivu teorie kulturní evoluce. Zaměřuji se přitom na kanály a rozsah kulturního přenosu, jež se odehrává v rap music (5. kapitola), a na to, jak jednotliví rapeři využívají vlivu přenosových biasů, aby zvýšili šance na svůj úspěch v kulturní sféře (6. kapitola). V poslední kapitole pak rozebírám několik morálních témat, která rezonují v rap music a někteří autoři u nich předpokládají, že ovlivňují morální nastavení svých posluchačů (7. kapitola).

Abstract:

In recent debates in moral psychology and literary Darwinism, several authors suggested that narrative art plays a significant role in the process of the social learning of moral norms, functioning as storage of locally salient moral information. However, a comprehensive and integrative view, which would help explain the inner workings of this morally educative function of narrative art, is still missing. My main ambition is to fill this gap in our understanding by providing such account. I use an interdisciplinary perspective to offer a synthesizing integrative view of this cultural practice anchored in the theoretical framework of biological and cultural evolution. In the first part of this thesis, I analyze and reconstruct the aforementioned integrative account. First, I show how thoroughly dependent humans are on the process of social learning that allows them to flexibly optimize their behavior in an environment that is highly spatially and temporally variable – something that is especially true for moral domain (Chapter 1). Second, I discuss how our evolved moral psychology favors those types of social learning of moral information that are rather informal in nature, aim more at influencing affectively laden moral intuitions rather than faculty of reason, and incorporate narrative elements (Chapter 2). Third, I argue that narrative art itself has close ties to morality and has been employed in the hominin lineage precisely for its ability to transmit adaptive information about one’s local environment, prominently information about the social environment, including moral norms (Chapter 3). The second part takes the form of a case study which enables me to flesh out in concrete terms this theoretical framework through its application to one example of modern narrative art that has enjoyed immense popularity lately – contemporary American rap music. After discussing the reasons for choosing rap music as a subject of my case study (Chapter 4), I analyze it through the lenses of the theory of cultural evolution. I look at the pathways and the scope of cultural transmission that is taking place in rap music (Chapter 5) and how various rappers harness the power of transmission biases to enhance their cultural success (Chapter 6). In the last chapter, I discuss several moral topics resonating through rap lyrics that have been implicated in influencing the moral outlook of its recipients (Chapter 7).
