Topic-Focus Articulation of Isotopy.

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce pojednává o jazykových jevech na nadvětné úrovni. Konkrétně zkoumá, jak lze posílit textovou analýzu doplně-ním pařížského programu interpretační sémantiky, jehož autorem je François Rastier, zejména jeho teorii isotopií, elementárními aspekty aktuálního členění větného (AČV) / funkční větné perspektivy (FVP), jež byly vypracovány v pražské a brněnské jazykovědné tradici (Petrem Sgallem a jeho kolegy, Františkem Danešem a Janem Firbasem, kteří všichni navázali na myšlenky Viléma Mathesia o aktuálním členění a větné perspektivě), a zda lze uvedenými aspekty zvětšit popisnou sílu aparátu interpretační sémantiky. V tomto smys-lu tvrdíme, že v rámci každého procesu interpretace textu spolu in-teragují dva druhy aktuálněčlenských jevů: jevy aktuálního členění na úrovni věty/výpovědi (AČV), jež pojímají lexikální morfy jako tématické (T) a/nebo rématické (R), a zároveň jako kontextově zapo-jené (KZ) a/nebo kontextově nezapojené (KN), a jevy aktuálního členění na úrovni isotopie (AČI), přičemž isotopie je v předkládaném výkladovém aparátu popsána jako jazykový jev s vnitřní komplexní strukturou, vykazující centrum (abstraktní sémantickou jednotku probíhající určitým textovým rozpětím konkrétních výpovědí) a periferii (určité textové rozpětí konkrétních výpovědí). Popisujeme dva typy sémantických interakcí, definované typem korelace sémat kontextové zapojenosti (/KZ/) a sémat kontextové nezapojenosti (/KN/) na úrovni isotopie a věty/výpovědi: tématicko-rématickou isotopii, navozenou kontextovým souvýskytem sématu /KZ/ centra a sématu /KZ/ periferie; a tématicko-rématickou allotopii (tj. „ne-isotopii“), navozenou kontextovým souvýskytem sématu /KZ/ centra a sématu /KN/ periferie. Uplatnění teoretického aparátu AČI na jazykovou analýzu českých překladů menšího korpusu anglických textů Evropské komise nám následně umožnilo stanovit různé typy tématicko-rématických isotopií a allotopií a uspořádat je v provizorní systém privativních opozic. Hlavním záměrem této práce přitom bylo poukázat na skutečnost, že distinktivní sémantické rysy aktuál-ního členění na úrovni větné (AČV) a na úrovni nadvětné (AČI) jsou jednak strukturně paralelní, jednak funkčně komplementární.

Abstract:

The present Ph. D. thesis deals with linguistic phenomena at suprasentential level. In particular, it looks into how textual analysis can be enhanced by supplementing the Pa-risian programme of interpretive semantics, as devised by François Rastier, namely his theory of isotopies, with elementary aspects of topic-focus articulation (TFA) / func-tional sentence perspective (FSP), as elaborated within the linguistic traditions of Pra-gue and Brno (by Petr Sgall and his fellow researchers, František Daneš and Jan Firbas, all of them following up on Vilém Mathesius’ ideas on sentence articulation and per-spective), and how the descriptive power of the former can be increased by the latter. In this respect, it is argued that two types of TFA phenomena interact during any process of textual interpretation: those of topic-focus articulation at the level of sentence (TFAs), conceiving lexical morphs as thematic (T) and/or rhematic (R), as well as con-textually bound (CB) and/or contextually non-bound (CN), and those of topic-focus articulation at the level of isotopy (TFAi), the latter being conceived as a linguistic phe-nomenon structured around a centre (an abstract semantic unit passing through a textual span of concrete utterances) and a periphery (a textual span of concrete utterances). Two types of such interaction are described, defined by the type of correlation of the semes of contextual boundness (/CB/) and those of contextual non-boundness (/CN/) at the levels of isotopy and sentence, respectively: thematic-rhematic isotopy, induced by con-textual co-occurrence of the /CB/ seme of the centre and the /CB/ seme of the periphery; and thematic-rhematic allotopy (i.e. “non-isotopy”), induced by contextual co-occur-rence of the /CB/ seme of the centre and the /CN/ seme of the periphery. The applica-tion of the theoretical apparatus of TFAi on linguistic analysis of a small corpus of Eu-ropean Commission texts drafted in English and their Czech translations enabled to establish several types of topic-focus isotopies and allotopies and arrange them in a ten-tative system of privative oppositions, the ultimate intention of the present thesis being to show that the semantic features of topic-focus articulation at the level of sentence (TFAs) and that of exceeding the sentence (TFAi) are both structurally parallel and func-tionally complementary.
