Dialogue of secularism and islamism and its implications on turkish national identity forming

Abstract:

The thesis concentrates on Turkish national identity formation since the establishment of modern state until present. Main focus is given on how this identity formation was influenced by the modernization process. The modernization project is reflected critically and the author tries to understand how the national identities were influenced by the specifics of Turkey´s shift from traditional to modern society and what led to their repeated redefinition under the renaissance of Islam. The thesis is grounded in social-constructivist discourse and the main sources for analysis were the texts from leading Turkish academicians. The main output of the thesis is the application of three theoretical approaches, concretely Ernest Gellner´s critique of classic theory of secularization, Peter L. Berger´s theory of objective and subjective secularization and the relationship between national culture and national identity how it was described by Montserrat Guibernau, on national identities issue. By implementing the concept of identities into the research, follows author her main aim to provide deeper sociological insight into the analysis of perpetual dialogue between two competing phenomenons of Turkish society, secularism and Islamism, and to identify the causes of their interdependence.

Abstract:

Práca sa zaoberá vývojom tureckej národnej identity od vzniku moderného štátu až po súčasnosť, pričom dôraz je kladený na vplyv tureckej modernizácie na tento proces. Autorka ponúka kritickú reflexiu modernizačného projektu a kladie si otázku, akým spôsobom ovplyvnili špecifiká tureckého prechodu z tradičného zriadenia k modernej spoločnosti proces formovania národných identít a aké príčiny viedli k ich opätovnej redefinícií pod vplyvom renesancie islamu. Práca vychádza zo sociálne- konštruktivistického diskurzu a zo sekundárnej analýzy textov popredných tureckých akademikov. Hlavným výstupom práce je aplikácia troch teoretických prístupov, konkrétne kritiky klasickej teórie sekularizácie Ernesta Gellnera, teórie objektívnej a subjektívnej sekularizácie Petera L. Bergera a vzťahu národnej kultúry a národnej identity, tak ako ho popísala Monserrat Guibernau, na problematiku národných identít. Využitím konceptu identít sleduje autorka cieľ, ktorým je priniesť hlbší sociologický vhľad do analýzy neutíchajúceho dialógu medzi dvoma protichodnými fenoménmi tureckej spoločnosti, sekularizmom a islamizmom, a identifikovať príčiny ich vzájomnej interdependencie.
