Maternal gatekeeping: Mothers' and fathers' perspective and its predictors

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo prozkoumat, zda se matkami uváděná míra gatekeepingových přesvědčení a otci vnímané matčino chování vycházející z těchto přesvědčení budou lišit. Dále byly zkoumány předpokládané prediktory mateřského gatekeepingu. Data využita v této práci pocházela z projektu DOMOV – děti, otcové a matky o vývoji, který byl realizován Institutem výzkumu dětí, mládeže a rodiny na Fakultě sociálních studií Masarykovy univerzity. Ve výzkumu byla využita data ze tří vln sběru dat, a to jak od matek, tak od otců. Celkově byla využita data od 603 matek ve věku 19 až 45 let (M=29,72; SD=4,37) a od 122 otců ve věku 25 až 49 let (M=34,22; SD=4,24). Pomocí lineárního smíšeného modelu bylo zjištěno, že mezi matkami a otci není, s ohledem na věk dítěte, v uváděné míře gatekeepingových přesvědčení rozdíl. Jako prediktory mateřského gatekeepingu se projevila matčina úzkostnost, stres, vztah k dítěti a také její vzdělání. Práce přináší rozšíření poznatků ohledně mateřského gatekeepingu a získané výsledky mohou být využity při práci s rodiči.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to detect possible differences between mothers and fathers in a reported level of maternal gatekeeping. Furthermore, the thesis examines possible factors related to maternal gatekeeping. The data used were collected during the project DOMOV of the Institute for Research of Children, Youth and Family at the Faculty of Social Studies of Masaryk University. Data from three waves of data collection were used in this study. A total of 603 mothers aged between 19 and 45 (M=29,72; SD=4,37) and 122 fathers aged between 25 and 49 (M=34,22; SD=4,24) participated in the research. The data were analyzed with linear mixed models. The results indicate that there was no difference in the reported level of maternal gatekeeping between mothers and fathers. The findings also indicate that a mother‘s anxiety, stress, parental attachment and education were significant predictors of maternal gatekeeping. This study broadens the knowledge about maternal gatekeeping and its outcomes can be used when working with parents.
