The impact of plane crashes on the share price of selected companies

Abstract:

The aim of the master's thesis titled „The impact of plane crashes on the share price of selected companies“ is to assess whether air disasters have a statistically significant impact on the stock price of selected aircraft manufacturers. The immediate and medium-term effects of accidents of Boeing aircrafts on the stock price of Boeing and Airbus companies were observed. The event study methodology was used to estimate abnormal returns. Additionally, linear regression was employed to examine the relationship between the number of casualties and the magnitude of abnormal returns. The results indicate that air disasters do not have a statistically significant impact on the stock price of aircraft manufacturers and that the number of casualties negatively affects the magnitude of abnormal returns for the involved manufacturer but not its competitor.

Abstract:

Cieľom diplomovej práce s názvom „Vliv leteckých neštěstí na cenu akcií zvolených firem“ je posúdiť, či letecké katastrofy majú štatisticky významný vplyv na cenu akcií vybraných výrobcov lietadiel. Pozorovaný bol okamžitý aj strednodobý vplyv nehôd lietadiel od spoločnosti Boeing na cenu akcií firiem Boeing a Airbus. Na odhad abnormálnych výnosov bola využitá bola metodológia event study. Okrem toho poslúžila lineárna regresia na zistenie, či existuje vzťah, medzi počtom obetí a výškou abnormálnych výnosov. Výsledky naznačujú, že letecké nehody nemajú štatisticky významný vplyv na cenu akcií výrobcov lietadiel, a že počet obetí nehody negatívne vplýva na výšku abnormálnych výnosov havarovaného výrobcu, nie však konkurenčného.
