Mothers Stress during Pregnancy as Antecedent of Behavioural Difficulties in Childhood

Abstract:

Práce si klade za cíl zjistit, zda existuje průkazný vztah mezi působením stresu během prenatálního vývoje a behaviorálními potížemi v průběhu dětství, konkrétně v období mladšího školního věku. Stres je měřen pomocí škály životních událostí, které se mohly stát v průběhu druhé poloviny těhotenství sledovaných matek. Druhá polovina těhotenství byla záměrně zvolena kvůli prudkému vývoji mozku plodu. Potíže jejich potomků jsou sledovány ve dvou časových obdobích, a to v sedmi a v jedenácti letech věku dítěte. V jedenácti letech jsou děti navíc hodnoceny i jejich učitelem. Dětské projevy obtíží v chování jsou zachyceny pomocí dotazníku SDQ (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire), jehož autorem je R. Goodman. Tento dotazník je rozdělen na několik škál, jež mohou být hodnoceny každá zvlášť nebo v celkovém součtu. Fakticky jsou sledovány emoční symptomy, hyperaktivita a nesoustředěnost, problémy v chování a potíže ve vrstevnických vztazích a jejich celkové skóre. Veškerá data jsou získána z mezinárodního projektu ELSPAC (Evropská longitudinální studie těhotenství a dětství), sledovaný soubor je tudíž natolik velký, aby mohly být zjištěné závěry dostatečně validní. Z výsledků je patrné, že matkou prožitý stres v těhotenství je pozitivně asociován s behaviorálními potížemi v mladším školním věku, i když korelace u většiny sledovaných oblastí jsou spíše nižší. Prenatální stres lze tedy považovat za jeden z antecedentů behaviorálních potíží v dětství.

Abstract:

The presented work aims to find out if a demonstrable relationship exists between prenatal stress and behavioural difficulties during childhood, particularly in the early school age period. The stress is measured using the scale of life events, which could have happened during the second half of pregnancy of the followed mothers. The second half of pregnancy was chosen deliberately since it is the stage of rapid brain development. The difficulties of their offspring are observed in two time periods, i.e. at age of seven and eleven years. At age of eleven the children are assessed by their teacher besides. Manifestations of the child behavioural difficulties are recorded with use of the SDQ (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire by R. Goodman). This questionnaire is divided into several scales, which can be evaluated both separately and in summation. Specifically the emotional symptomes, hyperactivity and inattention, conduct problems and peer problems and their overall score are investigated. All the data used in this work was collected in the international ELSPAC project (European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood) and therefore the studied sample is large enough to ensure sufficient validity of the conclusions. The results show that the mother’s stress experienced during pregnancy is positively associated with behavioural difficulties in the early school age although the correlations in most investigated areas tend to be somewhat low. Prenatal stress can therefore be considered as one of the antecedents of behavioural difficulties in childhood.
