Security of Android APK installation packages

Abstract:

Práce si dává za cíl prozkoumat možnosti modifikace a vytvoření programu pro provádění automatické změny APK balíčku, jehož obohatí o určitou námi definovanou funkčnost, prováděnou na pozadí. Úvodní teorie se věnuje bezpečnosti instalačních balíčků a jejich struktuře. Dále jsou zde uvedeny programy použitelné pro úpravu, rozkódování/zakódování balíčku a jeho součástí, průnik k funkcím a třídám APK souboru a jejich podpisu. Kapitola o implementaci naznačuje průběh modifikace za pomocí zmíněných programů a popis vkládané funkčnosti, o kterou jsou jednotlivé balíčky obohaceny. Testování lze rozdělit do dvou kategorií. Nejprve se věnujeme testování průběhu modifikace, následně se zabýváme testováním funkčnosti modifikovaného APK souboru na různých zařízeních. Závěrem shrnujeme dosažení cíle práce, dále pak bezpečnost, výsledky testování, možnosti dalšího vylepšení a použití naší aplikace.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to explore the possibilities of modifying and creating a program through which a user could make alterations to the APK package. The reason for such alterations is to add a certain predefined functionality performed on the display. The introductory theoretical chapter looks into the safety of the installation packages and their structure. The chapter also describes programs used for editing, decoding/encoding packages and their components, and the intersection of the functions and classes of the APK file and its signature. The next chapter demonstrates the implementation process of the actual alterations based on the utilization of the programs mentioned in the previous chapter. The chapter also includes description of functionalities implemented to each individual package. Testing can be divided into two categories. First, the study discusses the testing during the alteration process, and then it engages in testing the functionality of the modified APK file on different devices. The conclusion summarizes the achievement of the main objective, as well as safety, results of the testing, possibilities of further improvements, and the practical application of our software.
