Perception and experience of ethnic identity of Romany adolescents living in the Czech republic

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá tematikou etnické identity u romských adolescentů. Práce je rozčleněna do dvou částí. Teoretická část je složena ze tří kapitol. První kapitola se zabývá identitou jedince, jejím vývojem, vybranými teoriemi identity. Druhá kapitola je zaměřena na vymezení termínů etnikum, etnicita, etnická identita. Dále jsou popisována specifika Romů jako etnika, vývoj etnické identity a také její vliv na jedince. Závěrečná kapitola teoretické části charakterizuje specifické vývojové změny v období adolescence. Empirická část práce je uvedena metodologickou stránkou výzkumného šetření. Nejprve je uváděn cíl výzkumného šetření, kterým je zodpovězení výzkumné otázky: Jakým způsobem vnímají a prožívají svou etnickou identitu romští adolescenti? Dále jsou podrobně vymezeny metody a průběh výzkumu. Zvolena byla kvalitativní výzkumná strategie, bylo realizováno 14 rozhovorů s romskými adolescenty. Závěr práce je věnován výsledkům a interpretaci dat.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the subject of the identity of Romany adolescents. The work is divided into two parts. The theoretical part consists of three chapters. The first chapter focuses on the identity of an individual, his development and selected identity theories. The second chapter is aimed at defining the terms such as an ethnic group, ethnicity and ethnic identity. Further more there are described particularities of Romany people as an ethnic, development of an ethnic identity and also its influences on an individual. The conclusion chapter of the theoretical part characterizes specific developmental changes in the adolescent stage. The empirical part of the work introduces the methodological aspect of the research. Firstly there is specified the research aim, which is to answer the research question: How do Romany adolescents perceive and experience their Romany identity? There are also described in details the methods and the course of the research. The qualitative research strategy was chosen and 14 interviews were hold with Romany adolescents. The conclusion is dedicated to the research results and their interpretation.
