Sharing feelings, moods, and experiences: meanings of emojis, emoticons, and punctuation in chats

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the investigation of nonverbal communication through CMC. The aim of this work is to qualitatively describe the expression of emotions and moods in messages with and without emoji - how these types of messages differ in percentage depending on the closeness of the relationship between two participants of the conversation and depending on their cultural affiliation. Furthermore, the work focuses on whether nonverbal communication in the form of emoji is replaced with something else in messages, what are the reasons for the replacing and whether misinterpretations occur in non-emoji messages. The subject of examination are the author's private messages with twenty friends which consist of posts (messages sent by the author of this work) and responses (messages responding to the posts). The findings of this work are further used for a project-based learning model lesson on the topic of online nonverbal communication intended for the junior and senior secondary schools.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na zkoumání neverbální komunikace skrz internetovou komunikaci. Cílem této práce je kvalitativně popsat vyjadřování emocí a nálad ve zprávách s emoji a bez něj - jak se procentuálně liší tyto druhy zpráv v závislosti na blízkosti vztahu dvou účastníků konverzace a v závislosti na jejich kulturní příslušnosti. Dále se práce zaměřuje na to, zda neverbální komunikaci ve formě emoji ve zprávách něco nahrazuje, jaké jsou pro toto nahrazení důvody a zda ve zprávách, kde emoji chybí, dochází k dezinterpretacím. Předmětem zkoumání jsou autorčiny soukromé zprávy s dvaceti přáteli, které tvoří posty (zprávy poslané autorkou této práce) a odpovědi (zprávy odpovídající na autorčiny posty). Poznatky této práce jsou dále využity pro modelovou hodinu projektového učení na téma online neverbální komunikace určenou pro druhý stupeň základních škol.
