Self-narrative in Selected Prose Works by Kazuo Ishiguro

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou sebenarativu nespolehlivých vypravěček dvou vybraných románů Kazua Ishigura se záměrem zjistit, jakým způsobem texty zobrazují jejich narativní identitu. S ohledem na to, že vypravěčky přímo nespadají do kategorie „člověk“, zajímá nás, jak mohou nasměrovat čtenáře k dalším možným interpretacím díla, případně jak autor sám může díky volbě tohoto typu vypravěček reflektovat mimotextový svět. Při analýze, interpretaci a následné komparaci jejich sebenarativů vycházíme z poznatků oblasti kognitivní psychologie a naratologie s přihlédnutím ke společensko-kulturním modelům, narativům a reprezentacím, které jsou platné pro fikční světy vybraných románů. Docházíme k tomu, že jsou v sebenarativech vypravěček primárně reflektována existenciální témata. Ishiguro však jejich prostřednictvím nepřímo kritizuje společnost a upozorňuje na sílu master narativů.

Abstract:

This Diploma Thesis deals with the self-narrative of the unreliable female narrators of two selected novels by Kazuo Ishiguro with the intention of finding out how the texts portray their narrative identity. Given that the narrators do not directly fall into the category of "human", we are interested in how they can direct the reader to other possible interpretations of the work, or how the author himself can reflect the extra-textual world through the choice of this type of narrators. In analyzing, interpreting, and then comparing their self-narratives, we draw on insights from the fields of cognitive psychology and narratology, taking into account the socio-cultural models, narratives, and representations that are valid for the fictional worlds of the selected novels. We conclude that existential themes are primarily reflected in the narrators' self-narratives. Ishiguro, however, indirectly critiques society through them and draws attention to the power of master narratives.
