Mythopoeia in High Fantasy Comparing the use of myth and mythical intertexts in J.R.R.Tolkien and C.S.Lewis

Abstract:

J.R.R. Tolkien a C.S.Lewis jsou známí svou tvorbou široce pojatých děl krásné literatury, která se odehrávají v originálních, nově vytvořených světech s vlastní historií a mytologií. Oba autoři použili rozličné mytologické motivy v kombinaci s vlastním náboženstvím a přesvědčením. Jejich díla mají významný vliv na autory moderní krásné literatury a prakticky položila základ, na kterém je postavena fantastická literatura a její konvence tak, jak je známe dnes. Bereme-li v úvahu tato fakta, tato práce se nejprve zabývá myšlenkovým procesem, který stojí za díly J.R.R. Tolkiena a C.S.Lewise – konkrétně se jedná o díla Silmarillion a Čarodějův synovec. Porovnává tato díla a uvažování, na kterém je založeno použití konkrétních mýtů a mytologických témat v těchto textech. Dále zkoumá akademické prostředí, ze kterého oba autoři pocházejí a které hrálo významnou roli v utváření jejich názorů, co se týče užití a interpretace mytologických témat, a probírá žánrové konvence, které se staly směrodatnými pro žánr fantasy. V neposlední řadě se tato práce zblízka zaobírá dvěma vybranými pověstmi ze Silmarillionu a Čarodějova synovce, na nichž ilustruje užití mýtů různého původu, jejich funkci a odraz v těchto příbězích, stejně jako princip, na jehož základě tato témata fungují v původním mýtu.

Abstract:

J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S.Lewis are notorious for producing very broad volumes of fiction, which takes place in original, newly created worlds with their own history and mythology. Both authors employed various mythological themes, combined with their own religion and beliefs. Their works have a significant influence on modern fiction writers and practically provided a basis, on which the Fantasy genre and its conventions, as we know them nowadays, was established. Taking these facts into consideration, this thesis firstly discusses the thought process behind the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S.Lewis – namely The Silmarillion and The Magicianʼs Nephew, compares the two, and the reasoning on which the use of particular myths and mythological themes is based on. Secondly, it looks at the academic background both authors come from, which played a distinct role in forming their viewpoints regarding the use and interpretation of mythological themes and discusses the genre conventions, that have become directive within the Fantasy genre. Finally, it takes a close look at two selected tales from The Silmarillion and The Magicianʼs Nephew to analyse the employment of myths of various origin and their function and reflection within these tales, as well as the principle on which the selected themes work within the original myth.
