The Role of Ethnic Groups in Democratization of Burma

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je určit, jakou roli hrají etnické menšinové skupiny v období demokratizace Barmy. Události posledních desítek let ukazují, jak etnická dimenze negativně ovlivňuje životy obyvatel Barmy, a to zejména menšinových etnik Arakanců, Čjinů, Kačjinů, Kajaů, Karenů, Monů a Šanů. Vláda vojenské junty marginalizovala většinu menšinových práv a po celou dobu své vlády vyloučila menšinová etnika z veškerého dění v zemi. Velká očekávání přinesl březen roku 2011, kdy byla moc v Barmě předána nové kvazi-civilní vládě. Tato situace vedla ke vstřícnějšímu jednání s demokratickou opozicí v čele s Národní ligou pro demokracii (NLD), čímž započalo období postupných reforem. Tato případová studie proto identifikuje roli etnik prostřednictvím několika teoretických přístupů, mezi které patří teorie konfliktu a jeho příčin, režimy etnicity a příslušné státní politiky a postavení etnik na politické scéně. Tyto přístupy tvoří komplex, který popisuje politické, socio-ekonomické a kulturní postavení menšinových etnik.

Abstract:

The thesis goal is to determine the role played by ethnic minority groups in democratization of Burma. The past decades events show how the ethnic dimension negatively affects the lives of the Burma people, especially of Arakan, Chin, Kachin, Kaya, Karen, Shan and Mons minority ethnic groups. The junta military government marginalized minority rights and excluded minority ethnic groups from all the happenings in the country throughout his reign. The March 2011 brought big expectations; the power in Burma passed to new quasi-civilian government. This situation led to a helpful dealing with the democratic opposition led by the National League for Democracy (NLD), which began the reforms. This case study identifies role of ethnic groups through several theoretical approaches, which include the theory of conflict and its causes, regimes of ethnicity and state policies and the position of ethnic groups in the political arena. This approaches form a complex that describes the political, socio-economic and cultural status of minority ethnic groups.
