Dutch disease in Norway

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je vyhodnotit, zda Norsko trpí nebo v minulosti trpělo holandskou nemocí, a to v souvislosti s hlubokomořskou těžbou ropy a zemního plynu na norském kontinentálním šelfu. Tato diagnostika je provedena prostřednictvím analýzy vybraných makroekonomických indikátorů, ve které je prakticky aplikován základní teoretický model holandské nemoci v souvislostech komplexního ekonomicko-historického kontextu pro pochopení pozorovaných trendů. Z časového hlediska analýza pokrývá celou dosavadní historii těžby ropy v Norsku. Práce dochází k závěru, že ačkoliv jsou na některých ze zkoumaných ukazatelů identifikovatelné vnější vlivy ropného sektoru, Norsko netrpí ani v minulosti netrpělo holandskou nemocí.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to assess whether Norway suffers or had suffered from the Dutch disease in connection with offshore extraction of oil and natural gas on the Norwegian continental shelf. The diagnosis is carried out by analysing selected macroeconomic indicators. In the analysis, basic theoretical model of the Dutch disease is applied in the context of complex economic and historical background to better understand observed trends. In terms of examined period, the thesis encompasses the whole of Norwegian oil extraction history up to now. The thesis concludes that despite identified external influence of the oil sector on some of the evaluated indicators, Norway does not suffer nor had suffered from the Dutch disease.
