Carlos Bulosan's Immigrant Autobiography America Is in the Heart

Abstract:

The introductory theoretical part concerns the history of Filipino immigration to the U.S. and relevant events and periods in the history of the Philippines. The genre autobiography and the subgenre immigrant autobiography are defined as well, and special attention is paid to the Asian American immigrant autobiography. The aim of the thesis is the analysis of the novel America Is in the Heart by Carlos Bulosan. The analysis focuses on portrayal of homeland, racial discrimination of the Filipinos in the U.S., working class oppression and the assimilation issue. Further attention is paid to the causes for emigration to the U.S. and also to the presence, form and consequences of the American Dream.

Abstract:

Úvodní teoretická část se zabývá historií imigrace Filipínců do USA a relevantními událostmi a obdobími v historii Filipín. Je zde také vymezen žánr autobiografie a subžánr imigrantská autobiografie, přičemž zvláštní pozornost je věnována asijsko-americké imigrantské autobiografii. Cílem práce je analýza románu Carlose Bulosana America Is in the Heart, která se zaměřuje především na zobrazení rodné země, rasovou diskriminaci Filipínců v USA, útlak pracující třídy dělníků a rolníků a problematiku asimilace. Dále je věnována pozornost příčinám emigrace do USA a přítomnosti fenoménu americký sen, jeho podobě a důsledkům.
