Belgian Fantastic: The Comparative Analysis of Ghelderode's and Quiriny's Fantastics Short-stories

Abstract:

Topic of this bachelor thesis is an comparative analysis of two short stories of Belgian fantastic literature. Michel de Gherolde is a Beligain author whose writings belong to first half of 20th century. On the contrary, Bernard Quiriny is a contemporary young writer. Both authors produced fantastic literature. For this thesis, two short stories were chosen: short story "Rhotomago" by Michael de Ghelderode and "Dylan" by Bernard Quiriny. What these two stories have in common is the incarnation of devil. By comparation of these short stories we attempted to demonstrate different approaches of authors to this topic through analyse of main character, fantastic phenomenon and side characters. Beside this, fantastic literature played in Beligium important role in search for national identity. In certain short stories, we may percieve some indication of this aspect in spatial embedding of story or in a specific atmosphere, for instance. The last element of thesis is the possible difference in stylistic character of short stories, caused by temporal variance between their issues.

Abstract:

Témou bakalárskej práce je komparatívna analýza dvoch poviedok belgickej fantastickej literatúry. Michel de Ghelderode je belgický autor, ktorého tvorba spadá do prvej polovice 20.storočia. Naproti tomu, Bernard Quiriny je súčasný mladý autor. Oboch spisovateľov spája tvorba fantastických poviedok. Pre túto prácu sme vybrali dve z nich, a to poviedky "Rhotomago" od Michel de Ghelderode a "Dylan" od Bernard Quiriny. Obe spája rovnaká téma : inkarnácia diabla. Ich porovnaním sme chceli poukázať na rozdielny prístup autorov k tejto téme prostredníctvom analýz hlavného hrdinu, fantastického fenoménu a vedľajších postáv. Fantastická literatúra taktiež zohrala v Belgicku dôležitú úlohu pri hľadaní národnej identity a vo vybraných poviedkach je cítiť určitý náznak aj tohto aspektu, a to napríklad v priestorovom ukotvení deja alebo v charakteristickej atmosfére. Posledným prvkom je možný rozdiel v štylistickej rovine poviedok zapríčinený časovým rozdielom medzi ich vydaním.
