The Influence of Jiří Švestka to eminent Czech artists and contemporary private galleries

Abstract:

Diplomová práce mapuje dopady prvního privátního galeristy Jiřího Švestky na současnou uměleckou scénu v České republice. Instituce privátní galerie je první instancí pro vstup umělce na umělecký trh. Práce mapuje vývoj privátního galerijnictví v kontextu rozvoje umělecké scény po roce 1989. Věnuje se aktuální podobě trhu se současným uměním v České republice včetně vlivu jeho internacionalizace. Současná galerijní praxe je tak konfrontována se tou zahraniční. Dále se zaměřuje na budování umělecké kariéry prostřednictvím privátních galerií. Vliv Jiřího Švestky na českou výtvarnou scénu je mapován v několika okruzích. Jednak skrze výstavní činnost Galerie Jiří Švestka, dlouhodobou spolupráci s kmenovými umělci a v neposlední řadě v rámci galerijního provozu na spolupracovníky, kteří během tzv. druhé vlny založili své privátní galerie. Výstupem diplomové práce je potvrzení či vyvrácení hypotézy o přímém dopadu práce Jiřího Švestky na celou generaci porevolučních dnes již etablovaných umělců, vliv na uměleckou scénu a rozvoj privátního galerijnictví v České republice.

Abstract:

This thesis will critically analyse the impact that Jiří Švestka and his private gallery had on the Czech contemporary art worldtaking into account that a private gallery is often the first opportunity for artists' practices to enter the primary art market. Tracing the overall development of the Czech art scene since 1989, the primary function of this paper is to review the present structure of the local primary market, to compare it with international equivalents and to study the impact that private galleries have on artists' careers. I will argue that Švestka's contribution significantly affected the development not only of artists and gallerists but of the whole art scene in the last 30 years. To support my arguments, I will review three points of interest. First of all, I will scrutinise Švestka's exhibition strategies. Secondly, I will focus on his relationship with the artists that his gallery represented. And last but not least, I will focus on his employees, many of whom have been responsible for establishing their private galleries during the so-called "second wave".
