Influence of undergraduate specialization on student's map skill level

Abstract:

Tato studie si dává za cíl definovat míry vlivů jednotlivých faktorů na úroveň mapových dovedností studentů vysokých škol. Faktory, které porovnává, jsou druh vysokoškolského programu (vědeckého zaměření), vysokoškolského pracoviště, gender a mimoškolní mapové aktivity, jakými jsou orientační běh, turistika aj. Jako nástroj sběru dat využívá didaktický test, pro analýzu a srovnání dat pak statistické testy. Jak lze z názvu práce odvodit, za primární faktor ovlivňující úroveň mapových dovedností nejvíce, pokládá práce druh vysokoškolského programu. Svou hypotézu o dominanci studentů geografických oborů v rovině mapových dovedností opírá o jejich schopnost rozpoznat v sobě během předchozího studia zálibu a nadání při práci s mapou a na vysoké škole studovat příslušný program, například geografii.

Abstract:

This study aims to explore the impact of various factors on the level of map skills of undergraduate students. The examined factors are the type of university programme (academic focus), attendance of a specific university, gender and extracurricular activities including maps, such as orienteering and hiking. As a tool for collecting data it uses didactic testing, as a tool for comparing and analyzing data it uses statistical tests. As suggested by the title of the thesis, the expected dominant factor affecting map skills is the type of the university programme. The hypothesis is that students of geography-related areas excel in map skills due to the fact that they have identified their interest and talent of using maps in pre-university stages of education and this motivated them to chose a map-related academical degree, such as geography.
