Brno Slang in Danger of Extinction

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje hantecu jako sociokulturnímu fenoménu, který je součástí kolektivní identity Brňanů a Brňanek. Cílem práce je ukázat mechanismy ovlivňující proces identifikace v souvislosti s hantecem a jejich vzájemnou souvislost. Hantec je zde vnímán jako jedinečné kulturní dědictví, které utváří brněnskou identitu, na což má vliv množství makro i mikro procesů. Např. subjektivní významy, diskurzy, společenská struktura, vnímání každodennosti, institucionalizace i komodifikace hantecu a také prostor a paměť města. Práce ukazuje historický vývoj hantecu jako jazyka každodennosti i jako symbolu města s důrazem na to, jak se z hantecu coby mluvy okrajové sociální skupiny stala součást identity všech společenských vrstev. Porovnávám tak povahu hantecu během éry Plotny a Štatlařů s jeho dnešní podobou. V této souvislosti se pak věnuji otázce autenticity a používání hantecu ve strategiích tvorby image města a v marketingu lokálních firem. Výzkum se soustřeďuje zejména na mediální reprezentaci hantecu v mediálních a jiných textových a obrazových sděleních a jejich interpretaci v souvislosti s tématem práce.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is dedicated to Brno Slang as a sociocultural phenomenon, which is a part of collective identity of Brno citizens. The goal of this work is to show the mechanism affecting the process of identification related to Brno Slang and their mutual relation. Brno Slang is viewed as an unique cultural legacy, which is forming Brno identity. This identity is affected by a lot of macro and micro processes, such as: subjective meanings, discourses, social structures, perceiving everydayness, institutionalization and commodification of Brno Slang, as well as space and memory of the city. This work is showing the historical evolution of Brno Slang as a language of everydayness and as a city symbol too, with focus on the transition in which the Brno Slang became a part of identity of all social classes from a speech of marginalized social groups. I am comparing the nature of Brno Slang during the Plotna era, the Štatlař era and its present appearance. In this context, I am dealing with the question of authenticity and usage of Brno Slang in the strategy of creating the city's image and in the marketing strategies of local companies. This research is focusing on the medial representation of Brno Slang relating to be subject of this work.
