Silnice v horských oblastech jsou v důsledku členitého okolního reliéfu náchylné k svahovým deformacím. Intenzita sesuvů je dále umocňována několika dalšími přírodními a antropogenními faktory podél komunikace. Většina sesuvů v silničních koridorech je doprovázena uzavírkami silnic a v extrémních situacích dokonce částečným nebo úplným zničením silničních úseků.
