The Reflection of Photographic Media

Abstract:

Reflexe média fotografie Má diplomová práce je o přesahu fotografie do jiných médií a uvědomění si toho, že fotografie existuje v mnoha odlišných formách. Fotografie může být technická, umělecká nebo může například pomáhat při terapii. Neil Postman napsal knihu "Ubavit se k smrti". Postman v ní porovnává fotografii a jazyk. Říká, že jazyk (text) popisuje svět jako nápad a fotografie popisuje svět jako objekt. Na druhou stranu Umberto Eco řekl, že fotografování nás připravuje o paměť a prožitky. V této práci jsem chtěla dokázat, že nemají pravdu (můj názor je jiný). Pořídila jsem cca 10 abstraktních fotografií a vzala jsem je s sebou na gerontopsychiatrické oddělení v Psychiatrické léčebně Dobřany. Nechala jsem pacienty, trpící Alzheimerovou chorobou, fotografie dotvářet. Alzheimerova choroba má, mimo jiných, i symptomy, které podle Eca mají fotografující lidé. Lidé trpicí Alzheimerovou nemocí trácí paměť, zapomínají, jak dělat každodenní věci Ztrácí prožitky. I přes to byli pacienti schopni vytvořit nádherná díla a doplnili i názvy fotografií. Při tvoření byli dokonce schopni mluvit o svém mládí. Byl to nádherný pocit, vidět tyto lidi zase na chvilku šťastné. Z našich společných děl jsem vytvořila knihu. Má práce dále obsahuje červený, nespojený kruh. Tento kruh symbolizuje život s Alzheimerovou nemocí. Při vyvolávání fotografií používáme červené světlo. Toto červené světlo nemaže obrazy, které jsme vyfotili. Červené světlo tedy nemaže vzpomínky. Poslední věcí v mé práci je naprogramované video vln, které symbolizují mozkové vlny při spánku. Tyto stejné vlny mají lidé s Alzheimerovou chorobou neustále. Video je naprogramováno jazykem Java. Neil Postman viděl velký rozdíl mezi jazykem a fotografií. Já jsem vytvořila obraz jazykem. Během těchto "covidových" časů je důležité si uvědomit, že jsou stále ve světě další problémy. Úkol nás fotografů je na ně poukazovat.

Abstract:

Reflection on photographic media This thesis is about photography overlapping other media and realizing that contemporary photography exists in many different forms. It can be technical, artistic or it can help in therapy. Photography doesn't need to be specific anymore. Neil Postman has written a book called "Amusing Ourselves to Death". Postman compares photography and language. He says that language describes the world as an idea and photography describes the world as an object. Umberto Eco on the other hand said taking photos takes the experience and memories from people. I wanted to prove that my opinion is different. I took about 10 abstract photographs and brought them to psychogeriatric ward of Psychiatric hospital in Dobrany. I had the patients do whatever they want with those photos during their art therapy session. They could draw, paint, talk... I had no idea what the outcome is going to be because these people suffer with Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease has exactly the symptoms that Eco described. These people have memory loss, they forget how to do everyday things. They lose all the experience from life. Despite all of this they were able to see magical things in my photographs and they drew them in. They were talking about their past and what they were doing when they were younger - this was such an achievement for the therapy session and for my thesis. I put all these creations with descriptions in a little book and made an installation where I combine my and their works. My thesis also includes a glowing red neon incomplete ring. This ring symbolizes life with Alzheimer's disease and my whole project. We use red light while we are working with analog photographs. Red light doesn't erase the "memories" on those photographs. Last thing in my thesis is a video of black and white waves. I used a digital language (java) to make this video. Neil Postman had a strict line in his head between a photograph/picture and language/text. I created an image using digital language/text. During these "covid" times it's important to remember all those other problems there are in the world. And we as photographers can help by showing them to the public.
