Theory of Opposition in Non-Democratic Regimes. Political Character of Chosen Opposing Subjects in Czechoslovakia in the 1970s

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá teorií opozice v nedemokratických režimech a zkoumá fenomén političnosti. Je rozdělena do tří částí. První část (politologicko-historická) charakterizuje „normalizační“ režim a popisuje historický vývoj po roce 1968. Druhá část (teoretická) analyzuje opozici v konsolidovaných demokraciích versus nedemokratických režimech a na základě pěti teoretických přístupů (Skilling, Barghoorn, Linz, Schapiro, Tökés) vymezuje aspekty, na jejichž základě lze opozici v nedemokraciích zkoumat. Třetí část (aplikační) analyzuje vybrané opoziční subjekty ve dvou etapách: 1968–1972 (Hnutí revoluční mládeže, Socialistické hnutí československých občanů, Československé hnutí za demokratický socialismus) a 1976–1980 (Charta 77, Výbor na obranu nespravedlivě stíhaných) a aplikuje na ně dané typologie. Cílem práce je určit političnost těchto subjektů a míru dopadů jejich činnosti na režim a posoudit vzájemnou interakci moci a opozice.

Abstract:

The diploma theses deals with theory of opposition in non-democratic regimes and explores phenomenon of political character. It is devided into three parts. The first part (political-historical) characterizes the ‘normalization’ regime and describes historical development since 1968. The second part (theoretical) analyzes opposition in consolidated democracies versus non-democratic regimes and with the aid of five typologies (by Skilling, Barghoorn, Linz, Schapiro, Tökés) determines aspects, by virtue of opposition in non-democracies can be explored. The third part (application) analyzes chosen opposing subjects in two periods: 1968–1972 (the Revolutionary Youth Movement, the Socialist Movement of the Czechoslovak Citizen, the Czechoslovak Movement for Democratic Socialism) and 1976–1980 (the Charter 77, the Committee for the Defence of the Unjustly Persecuted) and applies to them the typologies. The goal of the theses is to determine political character of these subjects and rate of impacts of their activities on the regime and to consider interaction between the power and the opposition.
