Visual live coding as a tool for aesthetic experience: Hydra vs. p5.js

Abstract:

Primary goal of this thesis is to map visual live coding as a type of digital performance, within a context of appropriate aesthetic paradigms and new media theories. This should serve as a resource for the comparison of the chosen tools – Hydra and p5.js, which are designed for generating visuals in real-time and often used in the field of making visuals with code in general. Despite the efforts to define, in this context, visual live coding against the musical live coding, we can identify parallel and complementary elements that represent the basis for both areas. The comparison of tools mentioned above should provide a solid core for practical and theoretical outcomes to be put in the context of aesthetic experiencing or experience itself, as a computer in its essence determines the emergence of new ways of perceiving reality, based on the modularity of various systems within a computing structure that interact with each other. Chosen approach should also provide views on artist’s ability to interactively manipulate with time and space through these digital tools used in real-time and how such works, depending on time and space, can empirically affect the viewer and his own perception.

Abstract:

Primárnym cieľom tejto bakalárskej práce je zmapovanie vizuálneho live codingu ako formy digitálnej performance, v kontexte príslušných estetických a novomediálnych teórií. Východiskom práce je komparácia dvoch nástrojov - Hydra a P5.js, ktoré sú určené na tvorbu generovaných vizuálov v reálnom čase a často využívané v oblasti vizuálnej tvorby pomocou kódu. Aj napriek snahe vymedziť, v kontexte tejto tematiky, vizuálny live coding voči tomu hudobnému, vieme identifikovať paralelné a dopĺňajúce sa prvky, ktoré predstavujú základ pre obe oblasti. Samotná komparácia spomenutých nástrojov by mala poskytnúť pevné jadro pre vhodné zasadenie praktických aj teoretických výstupov do kontextu estetického prežívania a vzniku estetického zážitku, nakoľko samotný počítač nám vo svojej podstate determinuje vznik nových spôsobov vnímania reality, vychádzajúc z modularity rozličných systémov, ktoré v rámci výpočtovej štruktúry vzájomne interagujú. Zvolený prístup by mal taktiež poskytnúť pohľad na to, akým spôsobom umelec interaktívne zasahuje do času a priestoru prostredníctvom týchto digitálnych nástrojov používaných v reálnom čase a takisto ako takéto dielo závislé od času a priestoru empiricky ovplyvňuje diváka a jeho vnímanie reality.
