Real-time Detection of Network Tunnels

Abstract:

Síťové tunely umožňují vytvářet skryté komunikační kanály, které mohou ohozit bezpečnost dotčené sítě. Z tohoto důvodu je nezbytné mít zavedený detekční mechanismus, který by zabránil tomu, aby tato potenciálně škodlivá komunikace zůstala bez povšimnutí. Cílem této práce je vytvoření aplikace schopné detekování síťového tunelování v realném čase pomocí technik podobnostního vyhledávání. Na začátek, práce vysvětluje pojmy monitorování síťového provozou, framework Stream4Flow, jehož součástí jsou vysledné detekční metody, a taktéž základy podobnostního vyhledávání. Dále tato práce popisuje návrh, implementaci a testování třech různých detekčních metod na tunelování síťového provozu přes protokol DNS, a jednu detekční metodu pro detekci HTTP tunelování. Nakonec, tato práce zahrnuje vizualizaci získaných výsledků.

Abstract:

Network traffic tunneling allows for the creation of covert communication channels that may threaten the security of the network affected. For this reason, it is imperative to have a detection mechanism in place to avoid this potentially malicious traffic go unnoticed. The focus of this thesis is to create an application capable of real-time detection of network traffic tunneling using similarity search techniques. First, this work explains the concepts of network traffic monitoring, the Stream4Flow framework that the resulting detection methods are part of, as well as the basics of similarity search. Afterward, this thesis details the design, implementation, and testing of three different detection methods for network traffic tunneling over the DNS protocol, as well as one detection method for HTTP tunneling. Lastly, this work includes the visualization of the obtained results.
