Intensifiers and Expressions of Positive Evaluation in French: Observing the Intergenerational Variation

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with processes of intensification in contemporary French from the perspective of intergenerational variability in the usage and in the opinions on the usage. The thesis is based on a survey on the usage of intensifiers and expressions of positive evaluation by members of three generations of Lyon speakers (age groups 13-18, 38-43 and 63-68 years old). The informants evaluated their own usage of the studied expressions, but also the supposed usage by the other two groups and the characteristics of the studied expressions. This method allowed us to observe not only the differences in the declared usage of the three groups, but also the linguistic representation, i.e. how each group is perceived by the other two groups and how this perception differs from the self-evaluation of each group. The thesis is divided into three parts. The theoretical part presents the applied theoretical concepts and delimitates the subject of the research. The methodological part explains all phases of the survey and problematic aspects of the chosen method. In the practical part, the obtained data are analysed with the conclusion that the intergenerational differences show especially in the frequency of usage of intensification processes (they are used more by younger speakers, these speakers also use a higher number of forms than older speakers) and in the preferred language registries (more neologisms and substandard vocabulary are used by the younger speakers, more stylistically neutral expressions are used by the older ones). As for the linguistic representations, considerable differences were observed between the perception of the language of a generation by this generation itself and by the other generations; in general, the bigger the age difference between two generations, the more important these differences were.

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou intenzifikačních procesů v současné francouzštině z hlediska mezigenerační variability v užívání i v názorech na užívání. Materiálovým východiskem se stalo dotazníkové šetření na téma používání příslovcí intenzity a pozitivně hodnotících výrazů příslušníky třech generací mluvčích z Lyonu (věkové skupiny 13-18 let, 38-43 let a 63-68 let). Respondenti hodnotili jak užívání zkoumaných výrazů jimi samými, tak i domnělou jazykovou praxi ostatních dvou generací a vlastnosti zkoumaných výrazů. Tento postup nám umožnil pozorovat nejen rozdíly v deklarované jazykové praxi těchto tří skupin, ale rovněž jazykovou reprezentaci, tj. jak se na každou skupinu dívají dvě zbývající a v čem se tento pohled liší od vlastního pohledu každé skupiny. Práce je rozčleněna na tři části. Teoretická část se věnuje představení využitých teoretických konceptů a vymezení předmětu vlastního výzkumu. Metodologická část seznamuje čtenáře s jednotlivými fázemi dotazníkového šetření a s úskalími zvolené metody. V praktické části pak analyzujeme získané údaje a docházíme k závěru, že rozdíly mezi generacemi se projevuji především v míře užívání intenzifikačních procesů (častější u mladších mluvčích, kteří také využívají víc forem než starší mluvčí) a v preferovaných registrech jazyka (víc neologismů a substandardního lexika u mladších mluvčích, víc stylisticky neutrálních výrazů u starších). V rámci jazykové reprezentace byly pozorovány značné rozdíly mezi tím, jak na jazyk některé generace nahlíží sami její příslušníci a jak ho vnímají příslušníci jiných generací; tyto rozdíly byly většinou tím významnější, čím byl větší věkový rozdíl mezi generacemi.
