Nonverbal Communication Between Czech and French Speakers in the Workplace

Abstract:

Cílem disertační práce je odhalit interkulturních odlišnosti v neverbálních projevech českých a francouzských mluvčích v pracovním prostředí v České republice. Výzkum související s disertační prací vychází z perspektivy sociální a kulturní antropologie s přihlédnutím k poznatkům dalších disciplín, např. psychologie, lingvistiky a interkulturního managementu. Výzkum byl realizovám v letech 2011-12 v České republice a ve Francii a byl zaměřen na následující výzkumná témata: 1. Výzkum srozumitelnosti českých a francouzských sémantických gest realizovaný s francouzskými a českými mluvčími se zkušeností a bez zkušenosti ze vzájemné spolupráce; 2. Výzkum gest a jejich souběh s paralingvistickými alternanty při cvičném obchodním jednání českých a francouzských vysokoškolských studentů ekonomie; 3. Výzkum rozdílů v neverbálních projevech českých a francouzských zaměstnanců na mezinárodních pracovištích v České republice. Data byla shromážděna ve třech fázích se skupinami informátorů, kteří se zúčastnili výzkumu. Výsledky všech tří částí výzkumu potvrdily řadu interkulturních odlišností v neverbálních projevech českých a francouzských mluvčích. Rozdíly v neverbálních projevech vyplývají zejména z vysokého sociálního statusu francouzských mluvčích, kteří pracují většinou v manažerských pozicích na pracovištích v ČR. Neverbální projevy českých mluvčích jsou ovlivněné jednak jejich pozicí v rámci firemní hierarchie a jednak lingvistickým, kulturním a kinesickým filtrem, který se projevuje v jejich komunikaci s francouzskými kolegy, pokud je komunikace vedena ve francouzském jazyce.

Abstract:

The current thesis examines the use of nonverbal communication between Czech and French speakers in the workplace to determine intercultural variations in gestures and other nonverbal signals. The research was undertaken from the perspective of Social and Cultural Anthropology. It focuses on nonverbal communication, which has been identified as being particularly important in the intercultural interactions of Czech and French speakers. The study took place in 2011-12 in both the Czech Republic and France. The following areas of empirical research were pursued: 1. The examination of Czech and French emblematic gestures and their comprehension by both Czech and French speakers; 2. The examination of gestures and the co-occurrence of paralinguistic alternants and gestures employed by Czech and French speakers respectively during business negotiation training; 3. The identification of the differences in nonverbal behavior between Czech and French co-workers at workplaces in the Czech Republic. The data were collected in three phases, across three cohorts of research participants. The approach adopted for the analysis of the data was essentially interdisciplinary, taking into account findings from the fields of ethnology, linguistics, social psychology, and intercultural management. The resulting findings of the three areas of research confirmed a number of intercultural differences in nonverbal aspects of the communication of, respectively, Czech and French speakers. These appear to be mainly related to the social status of French managers working in the Czech Republic, which derives partly from the role and position of each within the company hierarchy. The nonverbal communication of Czech speakers was also influenced by linguistic, cultural and kinesic filters when they communicated with their French colleagues in the French language.
