Implementation of useful pronunciation tasks into English lessons

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na chybnou výslovnost určitých souhlásek a samohlásek, ke které čeští studenti v běžné mluvě inklinují. Práce je rozdělena do dvou hlavních částí. Teoretická část se zabývá výslovností, jakožto důležitou součástí anglického jazyka, dále jsou uvedena doporučení pro efektivní výuku a učení výslovnosti, a závěrečný přehled shrnuje běžné chyby ve výslovnosti a specifické chyby týkající se českých studentů angličtiny. Výzkumná část popisuje autorčin akční výzkum, kde několik aktivit, které podporují správnou výslovnost, bylo pravidelně zakomponováno do jejích hodin angličtiny. Cílem práce je nalezení vhodných výslovnostních cvičení pro určitou skupinu studentů, které vedou ke zlepšení výslovnosti jistých samohlásek a souhlásek. Výsledkem akčního výzkumu je široká škála cvičení a aktivit, které byly sestaveny na míru určité skupině studentů. Tato cvičení měla primárně zlepšit výslovnost studentů a pravidelně ji procvičovat v hodinách angličtiny a také si ji plně uvědomovat při běžné mluvě.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis targets on error pronunciation of certain consonants and vowels, to which Czech learners tend to incline when speaking. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The theoretical part deals with the pronunciation as the important component of English language, furthermore, recommendations for effective teaching and learning are stated and a final overview summarizes common pronunciation mistakes and specific mistakes to which Czech learners incline. The empirical part consists of the author’s action research where several activities that support effective pronunciation tasks were regularly implemented into her English lessons. The aim of the thesis is finding suitable pronunciation exercises for a particular group of students that will lead to improvements in pronunciation of certain vowels and consonants. The outcome of the action research is a broad variety of exercises that were tailor-made to the specific group of students. These tasks were supposed to improve students’ pronunciation and practice it on a regular basis in the lessons and furthermore, be fully aware of it when speaking.
