Christians in the Roman Army

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je zjistit, jaké postavení zaujímali křesťanští vojáci v armádě starověkého Říma v prvních třech stoletích n. l. Jak se lišili od pohanských spolubojovníků, jaké udržovali vztahy v rámci jednotek, jak své vyznání skrývali. Pokouší se rekonstruovat každodenní život křesťanských vojáků, tedy stravování, kontakty se ženami a potencionální svazky s nimi, bydlení, atd. Práce se pokusí nastínit vývoj křesťanství v Římě v obecnější rovině, bude se soustředit na významné fenomény s křesťanstvím spojené, hlavně pronásledování a soužití s pohanským obyvatelstvem. Také se dotkne osobnosti Císaře Konstantina a zrovnoprávnění křesťanství s pohanstvím. Předloží důkazy přítomnosti křesťanských vojáků v římské armádě, pokusí se najít konkrétní vojáky a zmapovat jejich život ve vojsku.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to find out what position the Christian soldiers in the army of ancient Rome in first three centuries A.D. had. How they differed from their pagan comrades, what kind of relationships they maintained within the forces, how they were hiding their faith.The thesis tries to reconstruct everyday life of Christian soldiers, eating habits, contacts with women and potential relationships with them, housing, etc. The thesis will try to outline the development of Christianity in Rome in general and it will focus on important phenomena connected with Christianity, especially persecution and coexistence with pagan population. It will also touch the personality of the emperor Konstantin and equalization of Christianity with paganism. It will provide evidence of the presence of Christian soldiers in Roman army, it will attempt to find particular soldiers, converts, and to map their life in the army.
