Ethnic identity of immigrants from Latin America and the process of adaptation in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Tématem předložené práce je etnická identita a způsob adaptace přistěhovalců z Latinské Ameriky, jež byly studovány na příkladu migrantů z Peru a Chile do České republiky. Uvedené země sice nepředstavují nejvýznamnější ohniska původu migrantů žijících v České republice, ale neustále se zvyšující počet přistěhovalců z těchto zemí může evokovat začínající nový trend. Migranti, kteří se chtějí ve zvolené zemi usadit natrvalo, jsou vystaveni složitému procesu adaptace v nové, často odlišné společnosti. Jedna z otázek, které jsem si kladla, směřovala k tomu, zda přistěhovalci mohou udržovat přes-hraniční sociální vazby a současně se včleňovat do nové společnosti. Ve svém důsledku může vést tento proces k vytvoření paralelní existenci dvou domovů a identit, záměně anebo k ukotvení původní identity a domova. V procesu adaptace tedy může docházet k proměně identity, přičemž původní identity jsou doplňovány novými prvky s ohledem na rozvíjející se vztah k hostitelské společnosti. Z tohoto hlediska se naskýtá otázka, do jaké míry je rozhodující různorodost kultur původní a nové společnosti.

Abstract:

The theme of this work is an ethnic identity and the way of adaptation of immigrants from Latin America, which have been studied on the example of migrants from Peru and Chile to the Czech Republic. These countries do not represent a major focus of origin of migrants living in the Czech Republic, but the ever-increasing number of immigrants from these countries can evoke a starting new trend. The migrants who want to settle in the selected country permanently have a complex process of adaptation in the new and often a different society. One of the questions I have asked was pointing to the fact that immigrants can maintain cross-border social ties, while incorporating the new society. As a result this process can lead to the creation of the coexistence of two homes and identities, confusion, or to anchor the original identity and home. In the process of adaptation there may be a change of identity, the original identities are supplemented by new elements with regard to the emerging relationship with the host society. From this perspective, the question arises to what does extent the critical diversity of cultures old and new society?
