Javier Milei's political and economic reforms in Argentina

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou politických ekonomických reforem argentinského prezidenta Javiera Mileie, který se ujal úřadu v prosinci 2023. Cílem práce je obsahově analyzovat jeho zavedené reformy a jejich efekty, a do jaké míry jsou jeho reformy realizovány v duchu libertariánských principů, k nimž se Milei dlouhodobě hlásí. Teoretická část se věnuje definici a vývoji libertarianismu, jeho hlavním představitelům a klíčovým filozofickým pilířům. Následující kapitoly poskytují historický přehled argentinského politického a ekonomického vývoje od počátku 20.století až po Mileiho nástup k moci, se zaměřením na strukturální problémy argentinského ekonomiky, jako jsou inflace, fiskální deficit, slabé instituce a opakující se politická nestabilita. Praktická část analyzuje Mileiovu volební kampaň, sled reformních kroků a jejich krátkodobé dopady. Zvláštní důraz je kladen na srovnání deklarovaných libertariánských tezí s praktickými opatřeními vlády, včetně vydání dekretu DNU 70/23, rozsáhlé deregulace a fiskálních škrtů. Výsledky ukazují, že ačkoliv reformy obsahují významné prvky libertariánského myšlení, jejich implementace se od čistého liší zejména v oblasti institucionálního rámce, rychlosti prováděných změn a politické strategie. Práce přispívá k pochopení dynamiky současné argentinské transformace a otevírá prostor pro další výzkum dlouhodobých dopadů politik Javiera Mileie.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis analyzes the political and economic reforms of Argentine President Javier Milei, who took office in December 2023. The aim of the thesis is to analyze the content of his reforms and their effects, and to what extent his reforms are implemented in the spirit of libertarian principles, to which Milei has long professed. The theoretical part is devoted to the definition and development of libertarianism, its main representatives, and key philosophical pillars. The following chapters provide a historical overview of Argentina's political and economic development from the early 20th century to Milei's rise to power, focusing on the structural problems of the Argentine economy, such as inflation, fiscal deficit, weak institutions, and recurring political instability. The practical part analyzes Milei's election campaign, the series of reform measures, and their short-term impacts. Particular emphasis is placed on comparing declared libertarian theses with the government's practical measures, including the issuance of Decree DNU 70/23, extensive deregulation, and fiscal cuts. The results show that although the reforms contain significant elements of libertarian thinking, their implementation differs from pure libertarianism, particularly in terms of the institutional framework, the speed of change, and political strategy. The work contributes to understanding the dynamics of Argentina's current transformation and opens up space for further research into the long-term impacts of Javier Milei's policies.
