Contemporary Critical Reception of Byronist Romanticism in the 30s and 40s of the 19th Century

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce si klade za cíl zhodnotit postavení české subjektivně romantické tvorby v soudobé literární kritice 30. a 40. let 19. století. V závislosti na literárně-historickém kontextu dochází k přesvědčení, že konflikt mezi různými působeními dvou romantických linií v českých zemích, vlastenecké a subjektivní, byl nevyhnutelný. Na základě vlasteneckého programu, který vytyčil Josef Jungmann a na něj navazující generace, vytvářeli autoři kritických prací společenskou funkci literatury a požadovali její určitou normu. Subjektivně romantická tvorba, reprezentovaná především K. H. Máchou, se tomuto programu vymykala, a proto nemohla být ve své době obecně kladně přijata. V bakalářské práci vycházíme především ze sborníků soudobých kritik, časopiseckých kritik a tří subjektivně romantických děl – Máje K. H. Máchy, Básní K. Sabiny a Protichůdců V. B. Nebeského.

Abstract:

The Bachelor´s thesis aims to assess the perception of romantic literary production in a byronist sense of view, using the contemporary critical statements from the 30s and 40s of the 19th century. In regard with the historical and literary context it realizes that the conflict between the two manifestations of romanticism in the Czech lands, the patriotic one and the byronist one, was inevitable. On the basis of their patriotic programme stated by Josef Jungmann and his followers, the contemporary critical authors created the sociological function of literature and asked the certain form of its realization. Byronist romanticism, represented mainly by K. H. Mácha, did not correspond with this programme and therefore it could not be generally approved of in its time of publication. In the Bachelor´s thesis the collections of critics and articles from literary magazines are used as the basis of research. Also three of the byronist literary works are mentioned – Máj by K. H. Mácha, Básně by K. Sabina, and Protichůdci by V. B. Nebeský.
